In the local paper:

MALE German Shepherd, 4 1/2 years old, due to a change in personal circumstances requires a loving new home, excellent pedigree, great temperament with people and kids, can live indoors and outdoors, free to a good home and a suitable home only (phone number)

My mum told me about this last night. Further down the column there is a 2 1/2 year old, also free.

Our house is tiny. We have one spare run but it is unsurfaced and like a mire after all the rain, no roof or box in there, it's just an exercise pen and my two, while OK with other GSDs, would not be overly enamoured with another one, I'm guessing.

It's obviously a family pet, I just think it is so sad. Would you ring and find out the situation and see if you could help? I don't even know anyone who could take it.

Only if you have the time to go for long walks and you,d be a permanent home, these dogs go in and out of homes like yo yo,s,be prepared to take on an problem as the owners dont always tell you everything,if there isnt a problem take it as a bonus.
It annoys me the people who take on GSD,s for 1st few mths, ruin the dog cause they wasnt capable of owning one, then getting rid,To then someone like yourself.
Think hard before you do it, and good luck !

Oh I know all about long walks - I'm getting ready for my daily two-hour yomp with my terrible twins! Had GSDs all my life and just so frustrated with this situation.

I just wish I had more time, cash and space and that I could win the lottery and fence my whole place off.

I would maybe ring, and give some advice, tell them u are part of GSD rescue, or u could contact GSD rescue to ask if u can help, phone the owners, tell them , the best thing they could do for the dog, is advertise in their local vets, and castrate before they let him go and charge a donation, to cover their costs, or atleast to stop him going to anyone.

, same for the younger one, or ask if they are interested in sending the younger one to the prison service, Im assuming they use them over at your end of the world too

Tis about as much as u can do hun, it's happening everywhere...they prob, have hols booked for christmas, or want a smaller puppy

Or, ask Gsd to help rehome if u can hang on to them for a few weeks.

I'd say no don't ring. It is really sad but no sadder than the other 100's of thousands of dogs that end up in rescue every year. If you had good facilities then yes but don't be swayed by sentiment if you can't offer it what it really needs.

Oh I know, OOTP, I get to read the stats in the council minutes every week and I have a lot of friends working in rescue, this one just 'got' me for some reason, it being a shep, and local!

Cala, I was thinking of offering advice rather than taking him, realistically I'm just about managing with two, never mind three.

It would be lovely to give them all a home wouldn't it but it's happening all around. I too know of a GSD female who is in desperate need of a loving home, since the birth of a baby the poor dog has been put outside and left to her own devices and is growing more & more despondent as the days pass. I don't personally know this dog but know from another website, she is trying to be rehomed.

Sorry didn't mean to sound 'off' in my post. I know how you feel, these ads get to me too as the owners are doing the best for the dog by advertising rather than just dumping.

Maybe you could call and ask why they need to rehome the dog? It could be that they're not able to walk her or something like that and you could help out in the short term

Meh, phoned loads of times since last night, still no answer.

Just a thought - if he has an 'excellent pedigree' then chances are I will know whoever he came from and I could point them in that direction or lobby for them if they haven't tried that already.
