Hi all,

Little ones ponio is in need of a new saddle. She came with a Cub saddle but it really doesnt fit. It cuts in to her withers and presses in to her back. She did a little buck with little one riding so I scrapped it, and have started to look for others. Proper saddles.

Ive tried several different ones on her, but she is very flat backed with a virtually non existent wither so everything sits up so high. Even with a 'wide' fit I can fit my hand plus some extra fingers, side ways between her and the saddle. They just perch on her back.

Heres some pics. Im sorry they arnt that great but they are all i have at the mo. Shes a 11h Welshie cross, I believe with dartmoor.

Can any one recommend any makes or styles that are possibilities to fit, so I can hunt them out to try on. Before I go down the custom made route, As I dont really want to spend a fortune on a saddle that is going to be used by a little child.

many thanks

Both Ideal and Black Country have some cob styles, which I think would suit your pony's flat back. Neither are cheap though, and I don't know if they come small enough - though I know Ideal custom make to order, so it would probably be an option.

Kent and Masters are a cheaper option who do a cob saddle, they might be worth looking into also.

Urgh, tell me about it ! I never want to have to find a saddle again, so hope fully I have just bought the right one. ..

I have found so much advice on here, if you use the search thingy - absolutely masses of saddles tried and tested.

Hope you manage to get it sorted soon :)

If you don't mind synthetic then Throwogood do saddles in xxxw!!!

Otherwise it might be worthwhile to look for a saddle fitter/maker in your area and get one made for you. It's not as expensive as you think and my friend had hers made for £375...that's cheaper than a new shop model.

Good luck

Thanks Very much. I do have a Ideal saddle but its a 17inch. so i think it will swamp her lol. I tried to sell it the other week and was told its too old and not worth any thing. such a shame as its a lovely saddle.

I had a quick nosey on the thorowgood website as I have a griffin for my welsh d and they are very comfy. There is a place not to far from me in biggleswade that stock and fit them apparently so I will try them first I think, before getting one made.

in the mean time while i save some pennies, I will keep my eye out for a second hand one aswell.

would make it soooo much easier if one make fitted all.haha

thorowgood do a kids/pony saddle. comes in super wide widths as is made for little fat ponies. they're endorsed by the pony club if that makes any difference. only problem is, i'm pretty sure they only go down as small as a 15" so you'd need to make sure your pony can take that length... xxx
