Hi all

I need get my loan horse a saddle. The saddle she came with does not fit her and is uncomfortable for me to ride in. I am getting her back checked this week. I don't want to send a fortune. Looking at the thorowgood T8 or Kent and Master saddle that can both be adjusted. My local saddle fitter only stock new saddles.

Is this a good option or pay for a saddle from out of my area that has a wider range of secound hand better make saddles.

Thanks

Ummmm, sorry, but who says it "doesn't fit"???? - I think your first port of call should be to contact the owner of the mare and ask her when was the last time she had a saddle fitting, and it would be a courtesy to inform her that you are getting the horse's back checked and considering getting another saddle.

I put my boy out on loan - and the girl that had him did exactly what you're intending doing, i.e. fitting another saddle. Anyway, she did so, and the one she picked just didn't fit him at all, it was awful. So I do think you need to speak to your owner BEFORE doing anything else.

Yes I can appreciate that the saddle the mare came with might not fit you, or suit you. But you still need to talk this through with the owner.

I'd be absolutely livid if someone fitted another saddle to my boy without my permission (yep, I was, when it happened).

Yes it is good you are having her back checked, that's a start, but please do speak with the owner if another saddle is needed.

Please see my post re: Kent & Masters saddles!

This was for my loan boy as he came with no saddle.

Now wish I had gone for better 2nd hand, but will see what happens when saddle fitter comes!

Maybe try and find a different saddle fitter in the area who sells and fits second hand saddles. I had the thorowgood griffin for my TB when i first bought him and it was fine to ride in and fitted him well. Dont be pushed in to buying anything if its not what you want!
