I need a new saddle for my Fell and am thinking of either a wintec or a Fieldhouse xch does anyone have any experience (good or bad) of either make. Thankyou
Don't know about the fieldhouse, but wintecs have a very curved tree shape which is unlikely to fit a stereotypical fell. You should get a saddle fitter to come out with them and other saddles though, then you know the saddle fits before you buy Nothing worse than forking out for a saddle then finding out you have to sell it again 'cos it doesn't fit
Sorry I should have explained, Tilly has been out of work due to an injury and now her saddle doesn't fit, I am getting a saddle fitter out and was thinking of getting one that is adjustable so thats why I was asking if anyone had any experience of them. I have been borrowing a thorowgood but although its ok for her it didnt do my back any favours. Ali2 I am near blackpool.
Thanks for that, looks like I might try a fieldhouse, I had a fieldhouse event for the fell I had before ( sold it when I lost him) loved it, it was so comfy but he was quite a narrow fell, Tilly is of the wider variety lol xx
I had a loan horse with a wintec, and it was okayish but felt very open! I have a new GFS APX (think thats what it is) as its a suede adjustable synthetic and the boy is going to grow as he's only 4. I have to say it fits like a glove, its super comfy (knee rolls are lush) and 3 more on the yard have them on order now!
I have 2 wintec 2000 which I prefer as they have leather girth straps and find them comfortable ,the gullets are easy to change and would recommend them.
from personal experience wouldnt buy a wintec, gave my horse huge white marks although it baffled saddle fitters as it appeared to fit perfectly. the straps crack in the sythetic material and doing up the girth/ stirrups becomes a workout!
I tried many saddles on my highland at the beginning and the wintecs were never going to get near to fitting him. The Thorowgood cob (in XXW) fitted him really well, it might be worth asking if you could try a different thorowgood as they seem to fit natives with flat wide back really nicely.
Try the new thorowgoods - totally different from the older version and much more comfortable. And a far better design then the wintecs. If you do go for a wintec however, try the Wintec Cob saddle rather than the standard version as they're a better fit on wide flat ponies like cobs. They do come up very big in the seat and panel however so it would be worth trying a size down for normal too if your horse is short backed.
