Hi, Anyone got any suggestions of good saddle bags? Can't seem to find any suitable.

I want one to carry a hoof pick and my phone, maybe a drink or lead rope, on longer rides and on the hacks to my lessons/X country course (before anyone assumes, obviously not at the moment or near future). A backpack/one that attaches to me isn't suitable as I always wear a thick body protecter whenever I ride and I also don't want a huge or super expensive saddle bag.

Haven't had one before and finding it difficult to find them so any suggestions would be appreciated!

I use a bag that is designed to attach to my belt, but then use a spur strap to attach to the front of the saddle. Similar to this.

Many different bags would adapt. If you have the two rings on the side of your saddle then these would adapt easily and be non invasive to riding... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/BIKE-BIC...518084&hash=item547b47baaf:g:CIkAAOSwO0Vd74vq

One time, I did a long Trec event, and held my stuff in a tiny hay net that had come with a compressed hay block. It was ideal, could see what was inside, string to attach to front Ds...

For a drink, I have used a drink bottle and simply tied it on.

That is just stuff I have cobbled together as I am too tight to buy the real thing... https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-WALD...281212?hash=item48e05486bc:g:vMcAAOSw--9eTCRX

I'd be wary putting my phone in a saddle bag just in case I fell off and the horse ran off with it.

I did have a stowaway cantle bag which I liked, it was expensive but it didn't bounce like the previous one I had. This one seems similar but a third of the price https://www.equus.co.uk/products/bu...Bm5oTAZVWpnJEST0DNEj5aYNp4s6ZkEQaAtxEEALw_wcB.

The shoulder one I had was a particularly bad design as one side carried two drinks bottles and the other a bag so you'd start out with it balanced until you'd had a drink then it would pull to one side.

I love my Decathalon saddle pad with two pockets in - plenty of room for maps, snacks, horse treats etc.

I also use the Performance Equine bottle holder (although do have to tie it to the saddle during faster rides) which comes with it's own water bottle too. I still have lots of room for a hoof pick down the side too :)

Have you also considered the V Bands trekking high viz gilet? The extra pockets are so useful :)

I have done a few long distance rides over several days and have saddle bags that go in front of the saddle and behind the saddle.
I found that they are ok but tended to flap around in canter. I adapted them with extra straps to try and tie them down.
I also bought a saddle pad that has built in pockets which works really well. Doesn't carry as much but more stable.

I have a pouch from decathlon that is supposed to go on your belt. It has a few zip pockets so you can put keys and change separate from things like a lightweight waterproof or a snack. I put the bit that goes round your belt round the front strap of my saddle pad. I sometimes use a carabiner to the saddle D ring as back up.

I have also used a small drawstring stuff sack that I thread through the D-ring on the saddle. It can bounce around a bit at speed though.
