Saddle bags. (Recommendations please)

In just over 4 weeks, I am riding my horse up the Ridgeway.

His saddle only has D rings at the front. What saddle bags do you use? recommend? avoid?

(i plan to use a small rucksak and a large 'crew' for rugs/evening feed, dry clothes etc)

In the summer I am doing a different ride (probably South Down's way) with both my horses. My other horse has a saddle with D rings on pommel and cantle - and its more than likely he will be 'pack pony'. So recommendations please ....

I bought the Shires bags that sit behind your leg which worked really well, although i must point out i did the Mary Townely loop which took 4 days and have never used them since.

Have a look at the Performance Equestrian site - they specialise in endurance stuff and have pommel bags which use front Ds and girth straps only. I prefer them to bags that sit behind the saddle as the weight is carried on the strongest part of the back rather than over the loins.

Another popular option are the cantle bags which fit over the cantle rather than behind it - I think they can have long straps for attaching to the girth straps rather than D rings.

I have used the cantle bag from Performance Equestrian for a couple of long distance rides over the last few years

going to use it again this year to do the Pennine Bridleway

I've used a hikers bum bag when riding and foung that useful, I put an extra zip pocket on the front straps too for easy access to my camera and sweets etc. I used the same bum bag when I did the playtex moonwalk marathon - has been worth it's weight in gold, fits lots in, more comfortable and less sweaty than a rucksack.
