I raided the tackroom at my parents house last night and found 4 saddles so brought them back to try on Yas, in the faint hope that something may be a vague possibility.

Anyway one of them is an old 16 inch English leather pony saddle, in what I always assumed was a narrow fit (it was mum's pony's, and she was really narrow in the chest, but I'm now not sure good a fit it would have been on her.

So with a bit of a clean up and treatment, it turns out it is an Olney Saddlery saddle, and it actually does fit Yas much better than the T/good Cob we've been faffing around with. Only thing is, the leather at the cantle has worn away.

So, my question is, is it possible to repair this, and is it worth it for this make of saddle?

Disclaimer - I am of course getting a saddler out to check the fit ( a different one this time) as I have also just bought an Ideal event saddle and waiting for it to arrive so would get them to look at both.

Olney Saddlery were very good in their day (before they were taken over) so no doubt it is a nice saddle. However, like rugs, things change so much that your beautifully preserved saddles from yesteryear will not match up to newer designs in terms of comfort for you and your horse.

Personally, for the cost of the repair, I wouldn't bother unless it turns out to be an absolutely perfect fit and ideal for your needs

You would probably need a new seat and it would be a couple of hundred in the south, only you know whether its worth doing.
