I may have the chance of a second hand Saddle Co saddle at a good price. I've wanted one for my lad for a year and had planned to save some pennies this year for one. Right now he is in a Wintec 2000 that fits him well - its a bit two short for me - and he is working nicely in it (he's had 5 saddles in a year) but its a Saddle Co one I want.

So, my question is has anyone bought a Saddle Co one second hand and not been able to have it fitted to their horse? I don't want to go to hassle of getting this one and possibly sell my current saddle only for the fitter to not be able to fit it to my lad! He is a 5yo Tb with high withers but is a medium fit.

Also, anyone have any experience of Saddle Co fitters in Surrey?

Thanks...!

I bought one (jumping model) for my baby horse to be backed and ridden away in, got it second hand and you have just reminded me that I need to stick it on ebay.

Won't be using it, it's narrow throught the gullet and not enough of a weight bearing surface at the back. IMO it just doesn't compare in quality to some of the better manufacturers. However I'd use the SC one over a wintec anyday!!!

Thanks - can I ask what size/shape your youngster is? I dont think it being narrow through the gullet would make too much of a difference to my lad! gotta love Tb's for that!

He's about 16hh and 3/4 TB. My medium width albion jump fits him well, this SC one is MW and is restricting .....

A horse should never be backed in the jumping saddle - it is a close contact saddle - so as with other close contact jump saddles is is for jumping only.

Also they are infinitely adjustable so you can have it altered to exactly the correct pattern f your horse. However there will always be horses and riders they don't suit as there is with any make of saddle. Give the Saddle company a call and they will advise you where your nearest local fitter is. I would say that being a TB and not wide you will have no problems getting the saddle fitted to your horse

Give me strength !!! Why on earth should a jumping cut saddle not be used for backing .... let's face it the SC one is hardly that close contact!

However I would be interested in knowing if the gullet can be made wider and the bearing surface behind can be made better and if so how much this will cost ....
maybe I will email SC, will be interested to hear their response.

thanks Bosworth, have details of nearest fitter and trying to get hold of her now. its all looking good, just need to check that the fact my lad has big withers and the saddle does not have a cut back head isn't gonna be a problem.

Cheers again...

The Saddle Company Jump saddle is a close contact jump saddle. A close contact jump saddle should be used for jumping, not for general exercise as it does not have the load bearing area of a normal saddle, nor does it have the depth of padding of a standard saddle. I have no problems whatsoever with a forward cut saddle being used to back as long as it is not close contact.

If you want a wider gullet and a wider bearing area in a Saddle Company Saddle you need a GP or an Event saddle. The event being forward cut but suitable for everything.

Don't worry about the big withers and the fact the saddle doesn't have a cut back head. Cutbacks are normally only useful whe the saddle is put on far too far forwards. When the saddle is put in eth correct place the points sit behind the shoulders which sits the head behind the wither
