has anyone heard of this happening? where bridle and saddle both come off and girth is still buckled at both sides?

what circumstances might cause this to happen? thank you

Yes, seen it happen with the bridle on a pair of driving ponies that were rubbing each others heads. Could have been very dangerous.

Ditto, saddle must have been very loose, or ill fitting where it rode up onto the withers, or both.

I took off a bridle when I fell over my pony's head as a kid. I was left sitting with the bridle in hand while the pony enjoyed her newfound freedom. Never seen it happen with a saddle, though, and I've taken some pretty brutal falls with both myself and horse rotating anf injuries all round and saddle stayed well put.

i have known it to happen many times with the bridle. i always make sure that mine wouldnt come off as my mare has got lots of little tricks to get out of being ridden and go home. have never known the saddle to come off, must have been very loose and ill fitting

Well, I've seen a saddle come off. The pony didn't have any shoulders or withers to speak off, and with a short neck and a swift buck, twist and stop with the head down, the child was over the ears still 'sitting' in the saddle! The girth was done up tight. You have to have seen it to believe it. It was a naughty pony, who had this trick taped to a T. I didn't like the fit of the saddle, but was told 'it was fitted by a professional', so I suggested a crupper... That couldn't be used either, as the pony would not only object but the judges would mark the pony down in a showing class. I did recommend that the pony should be lunged in saddle and crupper to get used to it, and that judges wouldn't mind. I don't think I was their favourite person, but in my mind, the childs safety came first!?

I had it happen to me the first time Iever went on a fun ride.Mules have flat backs and very little wither and I had been told there was a hill but not how steep!
The saddle graduallu started undressing over Sarah-lees shoulders.Bless her,she just turned herself sideways and stood still so I could dismount and sort it!
The next fun ride I got her breeching but I now have a "cross your heart bra" for Malaga ;D

I had a demon New Forest to sort out a few years ago. Narrow shoulders, no withers and big fat barrel. She would turn herself inside out on the lunge occasionally, and despite the girth being tight - over the top the saddle used to come!! She was lunged in side reins which compounded the problem! Most horses would freak, but she appeared to find it entertaining!
She is now a complete angel and no-one believes that she was originally a VERY BAD PONY INDEED!!
