I asked this when I had mine Lucy.
Mine is an extra wide verona cob (square cantle). He told me there is a limit to what certain saddles can be altered dependant on which type it is. In other words, my cob one isn't made to fit thoroughbreds and couldn't possibly give a correct fit on one. Not sure about the medium bit though, would depend on which saddle it is you're looking at.

Dressage saddle (on ebay very very cheap atm), but don't want to fork out if it won't stretch to Spring's mammoth proportions!

I know it's not local to you...but I got mine through Everything Horsey in Shropshire.
If you give them a ring and explain the size of her normal one and this dressage one I am sure they'll be able to give you some idea of whether it's possible.
I guess the good thing is, you'll always be able to sell it on yourself as they're well sort after.

If it is a square cantle dressage saddle you can have that changed to XW without any problem - not so easy if it is a round cantle, but it can be done.
