Hi, I have a verona saddle company saddle, g.p. Had it since Aug 2009. Bought it second hand for around £400 - £500 I think as it was fairly new. It seems to be wearing quite badly as the leather is only a thin layer and now has small holes in various places :(
Has anybody else with this saddle had similar problems? I was hoping it would last longer than it has. Has anybody got experience of the native saddle company? I had a middleweight appaloosa so she needs wide fitting saddles.

Yes we have this problem with ours, which is such a shame, as it is a really comfy saddle, and the horse like it. We ended up with a thorowgood, but having seen the native pony saddles, they are nice, and last better than the saddle company one.

The flaps wore on mine, just where the girth buckles were positioned. (Even though I had the leather cover thing over them if you see what I mean)

Unfortunatly saddle company saddles are fairly poorly made, the leather just isn't thick enough or of a good enough quality to wear well. If the saddle is still doing it's job then if you have a good saddler they can patch and tidy it up for you.

Have you contacted them direct about it? I seem to remember a thread about saddles that were faulty but I can't remember if they were SCS or not, in the thread I saw some were replaced or repaired. 2-3 years doesn't seem very long for a saddle to become so worn the leather is through, when you consider some of the 30+ year old ones that are still around and still clean up like new.

Yes me - I bought one five years ago, only got a couple of years out of it, I have used it very lightly too. Biggest waste of money EVER - EPIC FAIL! total rubbish and would never buy another. I have GFS saddles that are much older and show very little wear and almost look new. Will be sticking with buying quality leather second hand from now on. As for the SC saddle - it's in the bin!! Best place for it!!

I bought mt SC jumping saddle, second hand off ebay, around 3 years ago and it still looks fine. There is a bit of wear on the flap but nothing major. It only cost me £180!

Any saddle that has stitching showing that the leather is doubled or wrapped in places will have thinner leather thay may be subject to more wear. Butt leather is the single thickness leather that other companies use for the flaps and it wears much better, esp if buffalo or memel...but...you do get what you pay for. I had a Prestige jump saddle that wore well despite being doubled calf, but any leather saddle under maybe £900 for adult sizes is unlikely to have REALLY hardwearing leather. Memel and buffalo will be much more than that.

And glad the NP quality is appreciated :)

We have had a Verona since 2005 and it still looks brand new despite regular use (only saddle we have). Unfortunately, we are having to sell it as our Section D has totally changed shape and the saddle fitter wouldn't be able to improve the fit. Such a shame as this is a really comfortable saddle and, for the price we paid, as worn very well indeed. I wonder whether you were unlucky and got a faulty one?

Thanks for replies. It's a shame as it it a comfy saddle that I had fitted but at the end of the day I need one that will last. I will contact them again, although I did when the problem initially started and they suggested using boot polish to cover up the marks, but it's gone beyond that now. I'm worried the leather under the stirrup will wear off leaving a hole soon, as has already happened at the edges.
