Hi, I'm currently looking for a saddle company saddle, 16 inch seat preferably brown wh or sj saddle. I've had a look on ebay but could only find two (neither the right size or colour), is this typical or are there sometimes more of them on there? Can anyone suggest anywhere I may be able to find on second hand other than ebay? Does anyone know what a typical price for a secondhand one in reasonable condition is?Thanks.

Try Saddles direct they deal with second hand saddles of different makes, you can try before you buy for £15.
Fantastic service, not sure if they have any saddle company on at the mo, but if you speak to Sarah she is very helpful and will try and source you one

It will depend on which model you go for. The 16" is a pony saddle - is that what you were specifically looking for? The smallest adult is 16.5".

I fit saddles for The Saddle Company, and although it is possible to get a few second hand ones on ebay, they are less likely to be sold second hand as they are adjustable therefore you dont get horses growing out of their saddles. I had 3 saddles for my youngster before I fitted him with a Saddle Company saddle and now I just adjust it when he changes shape (which is very frequent) rather than buy yet another saddle.

Depending on your price range, you would be able to get the half leather/half synthetic version relatively cheaply.

ive got a 16.5 saddle company verona WH with adult size flaps. i got it as it was one of the lightest saddles for my pony (that i knew of on the market anyway) and i being that i am as much weight as she can take i didnt want a heavy saddle contrivuting to the weight.
its the best saddle i could find for her so in that respect i am happy and it looks great. but i hate it to ride in. i cant get balanced. i read a post on here afterwards where a few people had said the same thing kinda wish i'd read it before i may have tried to find an alternative as it really has changed my riding.
but never mind, ponies comfort comes first.

Thank you, I will keep an eye on ebay then- yesterday was the first time I had looked so I wondered if they weren't all that common on there.

Thanks for your answer, great to hear from someone who fits them! Unfortunately I have to go for 16 inch as the pony (which is too small for me) cannot have a longer saddle as it would be too long for his back (as advised by saddler). One of my other ponies has a saddle co working hunter saddle, and I thought a similar one would be good for this pony (which I'm bringing on, not keeping long term). The other saddle co saddle I did buy new, but as this pony probably isn't staying I was hoping to locate a second hand, therefore cheaper one that I can get adjusted to fit. I did wonder whether they would be less common on ebay as they are adjustable! Thanks for your advice

Vicki I think I spoke to you on a post about these saddles before? I said about having to have a saddle too small for me as the pony I have has a short back (yes...both of them do!) and that I'd managed to fall off several times jumping in it! I do agree the lightness is good as well- and overall I do like it, it's a nice saddle. I do have some balance issues- but had blamed that on my liking for small ponies, lol!

Re balance - I think this possibly could be related to the fact that the saddle is a bit smaller than you would have liked.

The trouble with adults riding in the pony version is that the seat is a bit narrower as it is designed for smaller kids. Thats why the 16.5" version comes in a pony and adult version - the tree is the same length but the width is a bit wider after the twist. It is possible to get the 16inch pony version and then put adult flaps on it - but you need a saddler to come out to do the right measurements.

I would suggest looking for a square cantle version as well - it has a bit more room than the round cantle and sometimes it makes all the difference i.e being able to actually sit deep into the saddle rather than perching on top. In the long run it may cause pain the pelvis area as more weight is put into the cantle.

The other thing to note that so many features on the saddle can be adjusted to meet the needs of the rider. I have an incredibly short backed Anglo Arab (annoying mixture of high TB withers and broad short arab back) and I had to fiddle about with lots of the options before I could get the saddle to fit him and me!

Let me know if you have any other questions!

i think mine is more to do with stirrup placing or something? i was fine in my other 16 and 16.5 saddles.

I am glad you said about the sqaure cantle - i opted for that when i had mine made as i thought it would allow a deeper seat rather than round cantle for a wider seat, and sometimes i'm not sure i did the right thing.

I have heard that some people found the WH particularly bouncy - but most of these people had previously ridden in a GP and therefore were not used to a more straight flap i.e. longer leg position. The knee blocks do help a lot as well although I dont really use mine in my dressage. I always ride in a dressage but on the few occasions I have sat in a GP I found myself a bit out of balance as well (and in the most awful chair seat position). The stirrup bars are a little further set back than most saddles but not extreme like the Isabelle Werth.

I am a great believer of the saddle being made to fit the horse and the rider as best as possible and it sounds as though you have done that with your WH.

Ive just bought a sc wh for my boy and i find it really comfy, it puts me in a much beter position and ive not found it bouncy at all, overall im really pleased with it.

I am looking for a 16 1/2 verona WH saddle for my very short backed arab.

I recently bought one for my TB and there is a huge difference in him. I am scouring ebay and such like but they are like gold dust!
Failing that I will have to buy new (much to my husbands disgust)

If your looking for a second hand SC saddle and you dont see it on ebay why not get a list of stockists/fitters off the SC website and give them a call round... at the end of the day due to the adjustability of the saddles you dont need to see it on the horse to buy it as you can have it adjusted later - I done that when looking for a 17.5" event version....

Not many saddle fitters actually have second hand ones, but it is worth a shot (just for the record, I dont have any!)

They do come up on Ebay - but it is a case of waiting and seeing especially for an adult version with a 16.5" seat. True, the tree can be adjusted, but bear in mind that some are made for the horse. For example, for one of my dressage saddles I had the girth straps adjusted for his forward girth groove as well as extending the webbing to take away the bulk of the leather from under my leg. I also had the stirrup bars lifted away (he is a bit roly poly). I also have the saddle flocked in a particular way.

By the way - my anglo loves his! He has an incredibly short back as well but I managed to get a 17" to fit (just!)
