I'm utterly confused about what to do. Urgently need a new saddle and am very keen on getting a saddle company one as my thoroughbred is soon to start work after rest so will inevitably change shape. I like the idea they're meant to be very comfy for the horse too and lightweight. He was a racer so I need a saddle like this for his reschooling.
I'm unsure which model to get him though, I had convinced myself the GP although am now thinking about the event as I'v heard it has more support. We'll be schooling in all disciplines with the hope of cross country in the future. Any ideas? Also as he is very high withered is it best to get the square cantle?
Lastly does anyone know of any saddle company fitters in the south lincs area? Many thanks

i have a high withered horse & have a WH saddle co saddle

if you go on the saddle company site they will be able to tell you who your nearest one is

I have just bought one for my flat withered cob. she is only a baby so i know she will change shape, so i couldnt see the point in paying for a complete leather one only to last her 12 months.
when i called the saddle co, they told me to opt for their cob saddle, but when i explained that i want to do showing with her and wanted a straighter knee roll, for an extra £20 they combined the working hunter saddle for looks and the cob saddle with the extra balance straps. you can also move the blocks on the knee roll to suit for dressage or a little jumping.
it is a very versitile saddle, and you cant fault their service either.

I liked the look and idea of these and was going to get one for my youngster, a working hunter.

However when I rang my local supplier, I was told prices started FROM £700!!

I thought they were supposed to be cheaper than all leather??!!

In the end I got an Oakfield made to measure, all English leather working hunter saddle for £550 and I was very impressed with both saddle and service.

I've got one, the WH verona i think they are great for horses backs - something that was echoe'd by the saddler who fitted it originally for me and the one who recently did a check on it for me. However, the stirrup bar placing is a little off, and it really effects my riding.
If you look back a few weeks - i think in Stable section, there was atleast one thread about these saddles that quite a few people posted on.

Not true - prices for the half leather/half synthetic start from £499 for the pony version and £595 for the adult version. All the parts that you see are leather and the only synthetic bits are the underside of the flaps etc. This version is a lot lighter than the full leather version which start at .

I actually have a full leather dressage as my "everyday" saddle and a half leather event used for jumping/xc and some flatwork.

mine was £620
i have never in my life paid that much for a saddle before, but as my mare is so young i know she will change shape. i had tried loads of second hand ones and couldnt find one that fitted her and i like too.
all you see is leather, and the girth straps are leather too.
i must admit it has taken 4 weeks for me to enjoy riding in it, i dont think it puts you in a bad position, its just what everyone is used too. you cant blame a saddle for not riding correctly.
it is much lighter than an all leather saddle and my mare goes really well in it.

I have just bought a Saddle Co saddle and have to say I love it. I picked mine up on ebay, there don't seem to be that many fitters and they cover a fairly massive area. I have one booked to come and check the fit and flocking and have been waiting 2 weeks just for her to call me.

Second hand ones are out there, and you know they can be adjusted so worth considering

You are right - there arent that many fitters. For example, I cover London, Essex, Kent, Hertfordshire and Middlesex which is a pretty large area.

You can ring the SC and they will give you the name of your nearest fitter(s) - not all of the are listed on their website, for example I am not listed on there.

I highly recommend the event saddle. I have ridden in the GP, close contact, WH and event models (all the verona which is the half leather half synthetic.....I suspect £700 is the Genoa which is all leather).

The GP is good, but I found it a bit hard. The WH wasn't my cup of tea and the close contact was just too flat. I find the event a brilliant design. It's like the GP but more forward cut and sits you better. I mainly hack, school, SJ to about 1.15m and riding club XC etc.

Whichever one you go for definately get the square cantle. The round one gets in the way for jumping. I would also highly recommend the extra £30 for the suede seat and knee rolls. Well worth it. They are very good for high withered Horses. My last Horse (who I had the close contact one for) was a TB. Easily adjusted as well.

There is a very good fitter who might go out your way...will PM you.

I like the idea of the SC saddles and am looking at their dressage saddle as one option. They have been brill when I have contacted them by email and spoken to them over the phone so I'd recommend them for service level. I asked if they'd be able to do me a special with set back stirrup bars, to help the ESHH alignment and they were more then happy to do so

Thats pretty much what I would say too... The CC was too flat and I felt insecure in it, the GP is great and although I find it fab for flatwork and previoulsy was happy to jump in it I much prefer jumping in the event version that my OH has on his horse as its more forward cut and has thigh rolls. I can remove the thigh rolls for flat work to help get my leg longer and pop them back on if jumping. I am thinking of trading my GP in for an event for my mare and will probably get a dressage - with the set back bars - eventually too.

If you have a high withered TB type I'd recommend getting dropped panels fitted to saddle - or find a second hand one with - as they fit TB types a bit better.

I agree saddles should help you and yes Saddle Co saddles arent known for being the greastest at putting you in the right position but for me seeing how well my horses go in theirs - so much longer and freer through their backs and shoulders than in any of the more expensive/better respected saddles we have tried before - makes up for it. Plus they are incredibly comfy for me too....!
