So I have finally come to the end of the road with my Wintec Wide.

I have a Haflinger with wide shoulders, but he also has withers. He is lacking muscle granted, but the more he is building up, the more the Wintec is becoming unsuitable and the last couple of rides he has started to give me little hints he is getting uncomfortable.

Friends with Haffies have suggested I try a Saddle Company saddle as they are so adjustable. There is a fitter in my area so that's no problem.

There are many second hand ones for sale that look nice, but I just wanted your opinions really. The fitter doesn't have anything in stock in my price range but she will get back to me later with some suggestions on model.

Is there a particular model that may be better for a very wide shouldered horse? Also those that have/had them, what are your experiences?
How do the seats size? I am a 10/12 and my Wintec Wide is a 16.5 and has lots or room for me, but that is because the seat is so wide. Would I be better off with a 17in or even 17.5in?

Any advice/experienced appreciated.

Thanks

Are you sure they are reccomending saddle company saddles and not native pony saddle company saddles? Its just that I know NPSC have fitted a number of haffies with saddles, am unable to comment on Saddle Company Saddles with regards to Haffies, although I do really like the look of them, so much so that i have just got one for ben :D I would have a chat with a fitter to be honest... If you search for Tamar Smith Equine Sports Massage, she is a qualified SC fitter and Im sure would be happy to talk it over with you.

Definitely Saddle Company as sent me a link.

The fitter is going to call me this evening but I was just wondering what peoples opinions of them are?

I would love a NPSC but they are far too expensive for me!

well, give me a week and I will give you my opinion:D I should have ridden in my new one by then :D

I dont have a haffie but do have an extremely wide cob. Nicknamed tabletop. Shes in a saddke company and I love it. Find it really comfy and lots of room for her to move. Freaked me out the first time I rode in it cos shr was striding out like anything. Finally realised she wasn't taking off but could finally move her shoulders freely.

Shes got a cob I think which is wider at the back than a normak gp. Got removable knee rolls

Pants. Stupid phone.

I went for the full leather as there is an option for the panels to be synthetic backed or something. Had it 2years now and still love it. Just had it adjusted again as madam has droppedloads of wweight woooop so great for those that struggle with consistent weight.

I love mine! I have a 16" WH brown one. I'd like a 16.5" but they're like gold dust! Keep your eye on ebay, I bought mine second hand on ebay, had my saddler check it over then fit it. I get it checked and adjusted every 6 months (pony is 4). I find it really comfy, and practical and would not want to change it unless I really really had to! It would also be worth keeping an eye on gumtree and preloved. You can get a cob fit I think, which may suit your horse? :)

I have a haffy & had a Saddle company saddle made to measure as he is so flat back & wide. It's a 16'5 & xxxxx wide (yes 5 X's wide )

Saddle is nice, very comfy, but wouldn't have another as it's been well looked after only 4yrs old & both of the saddle flaps have started to tear at the bottom. Another lady on the yard has the same saddle & hers done the same, same age as mine so she phoned up they repaired free of charge, so I have been in contact & they don't want to know unless I pay :(

Buy one off eBay (or similar site) in a size that would fit you. I'm a size 6-8 but VERY long legs so have to have a 17.5". Buy it and have saddle fitter adjust it :) that's what I did and was fine :) you can get them for £150 that way!

I have SC saddles for all 3 of mine, love the saddle, I brought 1 brand new and other 2 2nd hand. easy to alter, I have them on a TB, WB and Welsh Cob, fab saddles, fab quality and ver comfy ride :)

I have a sc saddle for my daughters sec b who has huge shoulders, flat backed and withers! Got the saddle fitted, I find they are very smart looking and my daughter reports comfy. They are also light. Certainly changes the ponies way of going too, much more freely forward going x

Thanks everyone. My Wintec is very heavy so lighter sounds good. Spoke to the saddler tonight and she's going to check her stock and see if she's got one. Any particular model better for a flat backed, large shouldered withered horse?
Thanks everyone

I have just had a Saddle Company saddle made for Kasper. I had a verona GP in brown. Really like it, super comfy and Kasper seems very happy in it.

Cost me £675 all in. And only £35 to have the fitter out to assess and reflock and adjust gullet at any time.

Only slight negative is that the brown leather they used is very very dark, almost black and doesnt match with any of my other brown tack, but as I dont care about matching tack I'm not too fussed.

The CC tree is fab for flat backed wide horses. Also go for a straighter cut model, Cob (comes with 5 girth straps as standard), WH or VSD. :)

Mine's great. I'm not sure of the model as it came with my horse who is very difficult to fit (flat yet curvy, no withers!) It's comfortable, looks smart and it's very light. I for one would highly recommend!

I'm pleased to see positive comments!
I put a post on a local FB page and bought one recently for £280 in almost new condition.
Fitter came out and was really lovely and great with our pony who's nervy with people due to his eye removal but she put him at ease quickly.
Ours has actually gone back to the company factory for the back to be widened as that's a adjustment that the fitter can't do on site so I've not ridden in it yet. My daughter did once and loved how comfortable it was compared to her Thorowgood.

My cob went so much better when we changed to a SC saddle.
They sell relatively cheaply secondhand on ebay; I have been very pleased with the condition of the two I have bought off there.

I lost my boy last year. If you happen to live near me in Bucks you are welcome to borrow his to try one out. He was 15hh, quite short coupled very wide and flat backed. The saddle is 17" or just less I think.

Thank you, I am in Nottingham so a little too far but a lovely offer.

The saddler doesnt have any in stock but ebay/preloved have lots :) Sddler only charges £40 to come out and adjust and can reflock on site.

I did notice the havanah looked very dark and not much different to the black. I currently have brown tack so may have to get used to the mis match :)

Does anyone have a 16in seat? and how roomy is it?

Thanks
