I have my eye on a 2nd hand Saddle Company cob saddle on the internet. My question is can my normal saddler fit it/make any adjustments, or would I have to get out a Saddle company rep?
Thanks

No a normal saddler cannot do it. You need someone who specialises in SC saddles as they are put in a press to change the sizing. This can be a mobile service though as the press fits in the boot of a car so you wouldnt necessarily need to send the saddle off somewhere.

Whereabouts are you in Shrops as my fitter is based in Gloucestershire and travels.

Adjusting the tree width and/or flocking fine tunes the fit of the saddle. The saddle needs to be the right type for the horse in the first place, so you need to be sure of this.

You also have to be very careful with saddles that have their trees bent to adjust the width. They can get metal fatigue and also be bent out more on one side than the other- very risky.

Saddle company saddles don't have a metal tree, its made from polypropylene. All trees are adjustable.

The risk of asymetrical adjustment is still there. And there is still potential for cracking or breaking if the tree has been adjusted several times or from extremes of width. If you cant guarantee the saddles history (not just taking someones word from it off the internet) then its a very risky purchase imo

I have a Saddle Company Saddle and as far as I was aware, the tree only runs along the back of the horse and not down across the shoulder. Serge wool is used for this.

If I were you, I would contact the Saddle Company, they are very nice people and they will give you a better understanding of the saddles design and whether is is recommended to be used on various horses (being adjusted accordingly).

Here is some info from their website too.

Here is also a statement from their website:

"Once bedded in the forgiving nature of the serge panels still allows movement and will adjust itself as your horse's back changes shape over time. Because of this moulding process, it is not recommended that you share your saddle between horses, even if of similar shape – No two backs are the same shape and you will compromise the fit"
