I currently have a wintec 500 with Cair, not my choice at all, came with Bean when i bought her.

So i was wondering, how much would I be expected to pay for a made to measure leather saddle
crazy.gif
?? How much did other people pay for
a) saddle fitter to come
b)second hand leather saddle
c) Made to measure leather saddle.

My saddler is around £50 which includes call out and reflocking of saddle. When i had my new saddle fitted it was £60 for the fitting and call out, plus he also reflocked my Albion.

Bloss has an Albion SLK Ultima Narrow which cost £1750 (!) and Archie has a Ideal Crown Dressage which cost £950. Both were professionaly fitted by my saddler.

They also both have jump saddles, Archie has a Henri De Revel Event saddle which cost £500, and Bloss has a Kes Jump Saddle which also cost £500. I dont do much jumping hence i dont have good quality saddles for that as i only ride in them once a week if that.

Wow P_G! Blossy's saddle cost the same as my horse!

(i bet it was a better investment too!)

I have an ideal international event saddle, came with my horse and has been checked and reflocked since. we negotiated it, a bridle and two rugs into the deal for an extra £200. Bargain! (they may have just wanted shot of the horse.......... - not really, love my pony!)

Thumper is ridden in a Bates Caprillis with Cair. Love the saddle and they retail around £800 new - £450 second hand.

I am thinking of changing it to possibly a Barnsby.

Sorry could not vote as I seem to have a saddle habit!!

Own

Gallop dressage - bought as a spare while waiting for Stubben
Stubben VSD - Extra long leg flaps for lanky legs!
Penfolds/Cuckfield & Horsham WH saddle bought off ebay to keep at the yard

Currently looking to buy a brown Show/WH saddle (not advertising or anything here

() but if you have one festering in a tack room anywhere....................

I have a Wintec 2000 with flock. Cost me £150 off eBay, it was brand spanking new as well, only sat on a horse once! My saddler is about £40 a go (about to find out how much again as need to fit the saddle to my new horse).
Second hand leather saddles cost just about anything. If I were you I'd get a local reputable saddler to bring some second hand and some new stock out within your budget and see what fits you both.

A lot of people would think £500 is a good quality saddle!

Other-I have a jumping saddle which I bought new for my horse. It's a farrington event. I also have a nearly new second hand bates caprilli dressage saddle that I bought recently from a friend.

Mine have always been fitted by a qualified saddler.
Honey: we got her when she was 3 1/2 so we got a 2nd hand saddle and then she outgrew it and now has a Jefferies Hawk Event saddle. She has had the saddle for about 6 years.

Onyx: brand new Stubbon Jumping Saddle, just under £1000 and a 2nd hand Ideal Jessica Dressage saddle, professionally fitted, Honey now has this saddle.

TBH there are so many saddles out there of different makes which are all slightly different shapes there is probably no need for a made to measure saddle.

Saddle fitter all depends how far they have to travel, ours is normally about 30-50 but sometimes he doesn't charge us.

I've bought a couple of Bates leather saddles off Ebay in the past. They've been almost new infact in both cases only around 6 months old. I've had then at a fraction of the cost new & with the removable/adjustable gullet they will always fit the horse.

As i have two saddles that total nearly £3k my jump saddles seem cheap in comparison!

They also dont fit me properly - whereas my dressage saddles fit me and the horses.

Megan - second hand (but only used twice by previous owner

) leather saddle made by silhouette saddlery. Cost me about £400 (I part-exed my old saddle, so not sure on exact price). I fitted it myself, but then had saddler out to restuff it, which cost £75.

Chloe has just got a brand new silhouette leather saddle, which was approx. £500 and fitted for free by the saddler. It would have cost the same for us to have got a made-to-measure one from the same saddlery.

I have a Bates Saddle, with CAIR and interchangeable gullet, this will fit the horse I have and any horse I end up with. Cost £750 plus £50 for stirrup leathers. Hope that helps. Can let you know supplier.

Can i just add to the OP - although the adjustable gullet saddles fit a wider range of horses, they certainly dont fit them ALL. And should still be fitted by a trained saddle fitter.
Just something to consider!

Couldn't vote as have too many.

Currently have :

Amerigo Single Flap - made to measure
Stubben Edlweiss
Matlock Saddlery WH
Sabre Dressage
Sabre Jumping
Champion & Wilton Side Saddle (very old)
Stubben Persival (sp?) not doing anything
French Close Contact Jumping

God I have far too many saddles........

I have a second hand albion dressage saddle that would have been £1500+new, but I got for less than half price, And a Bates momentum jump saddle which was £1300 new. Both are leather. My saddler charges £30 call out which can be split, plus £20 to look at/make an adjustment on saddles. Free if you buy one off him!!

Wouldn't dream of putting any saddle on any horse without having it proffessionally checked/fitted. I'm no dimbo when it comes to happy horses!!!

The whole point of purchasing a fully interchangable saddle was because I don't own the horse.

I ticked other - I have a standard Jeffries Stanford WH on order rather than one made to measure - Chum isn't the easiest shape to fit but this tree fit him good.

I currently have a Paul Jones WH which will be for sale pretty soon

I paid £30 for the saddle fitter to come out. She brought a selection of new and used and left one of each for me to try in my lesson both of them priced at just under the £1000, which was a bit steep for the second hand one tho' it was nice (Jeffries Elite). I didn't go for either of them but I presume some deal could be done on those prices and she would have taken my old saddle.

Personally I would pay between £600-£800 for a new one and say £200-£400 for a second hand one. Don't know what a made to measure would cost.

made to measure leather dressage saddle - approx £1500
made to measure leather event type saddle - approx £1300
can't remember exactly as had them 1 year and 2 years. Made by Martin from Woodseaves Saddlery and I love them

The saddle you pick should realy depend on what suits your horse best. I have had a GFS generation pony - fab and under £400 fitted. I have had two second hand leathers, however both ended up being replaced due to worn and cracked trees within only a few years - so probably wouldn't by a second hand again unless it was visibly fairly new and had some kind or guarantee.

More recently I bought a wintec VSD with cair - fab for the pony, seat is a little hard so has been upgraded with a gel seat saver £350 fitted and an Ideal Europa VSD that was the only make that fitted our new horse well , £800 fitted, it also has a yummy memory foam seat commfffyyyyy.

I would never ever buy a saddle unless it was fitted by a reputable saddler - once bitten twice shy.

I ride in a WOW with deep seat and GP flaps for Jumping and dressage flaps for flatwork.

I prefer the WOW because I can adjust it as my horse develops over the year.

New the WOW costs £1495, thou they have now brought out a cheaper range that retails around £950.
