2 people said that to me yesterday over the space of a couple of hours.

Two people who should otherwise know better - they've had horses for years and years and by all accounts are competant and experienced.

Young girl at the yard (but old enough to know better - she's 15!) has an elderly pony who's saddles don't fit - one's too long, one's far too narrow, the other has a broken tree.

I was her 'experienced help' and wouldn't let her ride in any, esp as the girl is really quite big for the pony (all 12hh of her) however she's decided she didn't like my advise anymore and a has two 'new best friends' older ladies whos advice is much more fun.

After a show down over her riding in one of the saddles (the broken tree'd one) which even she admits will hurt the pony, she went off in a huff and bitched to X, who had told her they'd be 'fine'.

X later confronted me and asked 'what was wrong with the saddles'. Appart from being gobsmacked that she couldn't see the problems initially (they are seriously obvious!) she went on to say "but it doesn't matter. She's a little old pony who will won't exactly go eventing in them, so she'll be fine. She only wants to ride her pony."

And meant it. She genuinely doesn't think it matters that the saddle doesn't fit the pony, because she's old and won't be doing strenous things anymore.

Later on in the day the young girl has new best friend Y 'fitting' one of the saddle to the pony and on passing I overheard "she's gettting on a bit now, and you won't be doing much more than hacking now, so it'll be fine. just put a pad under it"

For a saddles that's literally 6 widths too narrow (she's a xxxxwide, saddle's a medium - it sits 6inchs higher at the front than back!)

And the saddest thing is the young girls decideds she's definintly likes their advice better and there's nothing I can do about it

Poor pony's so good and honest and won't make a fuss either. Some people make me so cross

Unforunately there's no helping some people....and its always the poor pony who has to put up with things. You've done your best and hopefully she'll understand this when the novelty of her new 'friends' has worn off.

That's awful! I have a 20 year old and we don't do much but I would never ever dream of riding her in an unfitting saddle never mind one with a broken tree! Just because she's old doesn't mean she'll not feel pain and doesn't deserve well fitting, comfortable tack. Poor pony, they always suffer and we owe them so much. That makes me really mad

Dreadful.....its just as important in the oldie, if not more so....poor thing must be so uncomfortable. Ask her if she would want to ride in boots that were 4" too small......

My old lad is about 20-ish....still very fit and full of it, he had a new saddle fitted this year because he had changed shape- he could go on for another 10 years (hopefully)....but not with a knackered saddle and then a knackered back.

Some people dont deserve to have animals....

I feel your anger! And the ponys' pain! Aaaaaaaagh! That ranks alongside ' The horse is only on loan so i dont want to get another saddle'. I HATE IT! I hear it so often.

Oh thats ok then, if its old or on loan it deserves to be in pain. FFS, what is wrong with some people. thick as two short planks for a start.

Really sad to read this. A correctlt fitting saddle is so important from first backing until the end. At tweny, there are plenty of years left in this pony, and why should he suffer for the rest of his life.
The saddle with the broken tree should be destroyed so it can never be used by anybody again.

I know someone who is riding their new 10k 4 year old in a saddle that cost £30 from ebay!!!!!!!!!

When I asked why as the saddle very obviously dosen't fit they said no point getting an "expensive" saddle now as he is only 4 and going to change shape

Sadly they are right - although possibly not in the way they mean "changing shape"
