Hi all

I haven't logged in to HHO for a long time, but I've been quietly lurking :)

I wonder if anybody can help with a bit of a dilemma - are there any saddle fit experts on here that would take a look at some photos if I PM'd? I don't know how to post them tbh and would rather not post publicly without speaking to my fitter first.

Long version - I have a 17yo section D who was previously in 17.5 MW Silhouette. Physio came and treated twice quite thoroughly (we were well overdue, bad mum), there were no major issues with saddle area, but a small raised area of muscle just behind the wither on the left hand side. She had a look over the saddle while there and the flocking was hollowing in the middle of the panels so suggested it needed checking. Took some recommendations of fitters from her as wasn't keen to reuse the ones I'd had previously - all very marmite locally.

Managed to get recommended fitter out a day or two later, so Silhouette wasn't ridden in again. When we looked at Silhouette the head nails weren't even vaguely symmetrical, and the panel was stitched slightly higher on the left hand side. Fitter thought it has just been stitched incorrectly rather than had a twisted tree but said she couldn't confirm without taking it apart. I was already set on a new one at this point as the Silhouette was always a stop gap in my mind as it was wider in the twist that I prefer, so tried a couple of new ones and settled on a 17.5 MW Harry Dabbs jump with foam panels, felt beautiful to try, didn't move an inch despite not being girthed up tightly and suits me 100%. Horse is always tricky to try new things with as unless horrific, he won't give much away - it's nice that he doesn't try to put me on the floor but I really would value some input from him!

Fast forward 7 or 8 weeks and horse is now being tricky to school, won't settle in to a contact (which was coming along quite nicely) and generally being quite bad mannered - arguing in halt and then rushing off as a prime example. I'm also not convinced that it is as stable as it was.

The only two things that have changed recently are the saddle, and a new horse in his field which has upset the dynamics and he can be a sensitive soul about things like that, so the long winded explanation behind this is really to see if anybody can spot anything glaringly obviously wrong with the fit before I call the fitter because my horse is upset about a new field mate...

Thanks, and sorry for the long winded post!

New saddles settle over a few weeks and are best checked a couple of months after initial fitting. I would get saddler back for that fitting as it may just need a little tweak.

As above. I wouldn’t worry too much, it’s just time for the routine follow-up now that the saddle has settled a bit. Call your fitter and get booked in.

Horses can change shape in a week, rare but it can happen, a new saddle should be checked about 2 months from fitting, some fitters recommend sooner, especially if there is good reason to believe the horse will change quickly ("remedial" fits, young horses etc).
