Saddle for a short, round cob?

Hi,

Can anyone recommend a GP saddle for a 14.1 short backed (16.5 inch), round cob please? I currently have one made by the Saddle Company but find it a little uncomfortable so any advice would be greatly received. Don't want to spend a fortune either!

Have heard good things about Kent and Masters ones

Kent and masters trees are based oN Thorowgood ones I think, and a lot of people use thorowgood cob saddles on their coblets, K&M are the leather version, worth a look I would say.

The other saddle I use is an Ideal Highland and cob saddle (H&C) which is very nice.

Why don't you just get a saddle fitter out who sells second hand saddles, try a few - see what fit the cob and are comfy to you?

Thorogood t8 cob its half leather half synthetic, nice and comfy and prectically the same as K & M

I have a 16inch kent and masters on a short backed round cob and its great, fits well, adjustable and I find it really comfy but I have got short legs - longer legs might not fit on so well, especially when jumping

Hi Tarbs I have the same dimension pony and my saddler has just adapted my GFS VSD saddle to fit him - saddler said it was the best bet as it's really hard to find ones to fit his shape! It's very comfy to ride in too...

We have used GFS, Ideal and wintec wides on our cobs past and present, all very good, but my favourite is Ideal. We go for VSD to give more shoulder room. My newest lad is a very short backed round 14.1 cob, he has an Ideal Hoop tree VSD saddle, it had to be made to order because they don't do them in 16 inch as standard and that is the maximum length my saddler would put on him. Hoop trees are recommended for truly flat backed cobs as they are more stable and give such a 'perched' fit.

Some cobs do indeed need hoop trees, some don't though. We fit some cobs and natives with quite neat trees, wide headed trees swamp them and are less stable. Wide flat backed horses can vary so much it's useful to have out a fitter who works with those sorts of horses regularly and has access to a choice of wide flat tress.
