My friend's daughter has started riding my 13.1. She is a tall 5yr old. Her legs don't come past the bottom of the saddle however so I want to get a saddle suitable for her and my daughter to ride the pony. I don't want to spend a fortune so probably synthetic. I just wondered what sorts I should be looking for. I will get it checked by my saddler obviously, but he doesn't sell saddles. Pony is a medium wide flat backed welsh C with no wither to speak of. What seat size is appropriate for little kiddies of this age and presumably the flaps will be shorter too.

Thanks.

personally i would buy the best saddle you can afford, as the difference in how good saddles & less good saddles help a childs position are really noticeable

one of mine has a barnsby PC saddle, on his 13hh ISP & the other has a little workers saddle (forget the make) on this section A,

for what you have described i'd try & borrow a few different sorts to see what fits before buying one, it took me months to track down those two saddle for mine, but i'm really pleased as they both sit really well in them!

Sorry I wasn't clear. They aren't riding her as their first pony, they already have three others between them :o. She has a nice saddle and by the time they are riding her "properly" they will be a lot older and will have out grown the saddle I need now, if that makes sense. I just need something as a stop gap mean while. They won't ride her much, maybe once a week maximum as they have the other ponies to ride daily.

My friend's daughter is riding her as her own pony is too fizzy in company, so her mum is riding him and she is riding her when we hack out as a group.

If it helps I'm 5 foot nothing adult who looks blinking lovely in a 15 inch saddle, so a 14 inch would probably be a better leg position for a 5 year old

What about one of these? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/HI-LITE-E...t=UK_Horse_Wear_Equipment&hash=item565a6a0f68

supposed to be self adjusting, for a 5 year old I'd probably go for a 15inch saddle, ( try the kid in the zoe snape saddle (think you said it was 14 inches) for size, but would be surprised if a child that age needed bigger than a 15 inch

I wondered about them then I saw this and I want it :o

What do you think it means by self adjusting, that you can adjust it yourself, or that it adjust its self (how could it :o)

Handily all our ponies have very similarly shaped backs so if I got that one it might fit the A and the C and even the 14.1 ;)

Yes the ZS pad is a 14" but I wasn't sure how comparable that was to a "real" saddle.

That does help thanks!

I bought a 15.5inch thorowgood pony club saddle for my 5 year old son and 13.2hh pony. Would think a 14inch would be too small.

Id take a look at the Thorowgood PC saddle. Ive just sold my daughters as she'd really outgrown hers and I was riding her pony more. In the time we had it though it was great, comfy for pony and adjustable as he grew (he was a baby) but also my daughter really liked it (until her legs grew over the knee rolls!)
Ive heard bad things about the Shires Hilite- A friend had one and hated it as even though it looks a good fit the self adjusting is a springy gullet so constantly moving slightly (this is how a saddler explained it to me when I asked her to check its fit on my horse when friend gave up on it!) Too much "give" I suppose.
Would certainly recommend the Thorowgood though. Mine was about £290 new and I sold it years later for £150 which seemed about the going rate if you don't want to buy new.
Just watch some are older models which don't have the gullet system.

We had a throwgood PC saddle for my sons pony when he was small and had moved on from the cub safari. A nice little saddle, smart and comfy.

In that case the Thoroughgood PC saddle is a popular one around us, and I'd also suggest a 15", my eldest has a 15" on his 13h pony, he's 6, & it fits him well, but I can get my bottom in it without too much problem if I need to sit on his pony at all

Kent and Masters do a really nice leather adjustable pony saddle for a reasonable price. My friend has one for her 11.2 that her 5 yr old daughter rides in and it's also suitable for mum to ride in too.
