Hi, my son who is 4, has been asking to ride my pony. He has sat on her a few times now and seems pretty keen.

My mare is a 14.1hh chunky cob and I'm not sure if it's worth me looking into a cub saddle or one of the Shires Aviemore pads, or even if they would fit her? (The thorn pads and inky dinky saddles are more then I want to pay really - especially as I think him riding will be quite sporadic!)

Also, from a bit of googling, it looks like the Uvex hats are the best for little heads? Currently he has been using his bike helmet, but I'd like to get him a proper riding hat. :)

Thank you!

I think to start off with the cub saddles are great for small children definitely worth using until he gets more balanced and can safely sit in a regular saddle, we used one on a wide 13.2 cob and it was fine I'm not sure how the sizing is for them as it was on my friends pony and her child, I was just helping her child while she was leading the pony.

I know nothing about kids hats sorry, I'm sure alot of other people on here will though.

I've just asked her and she has an Elico cub saddle it comes with girth and stirrups, she used a thick poly pad underneath but her children only go on in hand walks as they are tiny.
That's a nice set, although I imagine the girth won't be long enough! 😄 Thank you, I will look into that as getting it as a set would make life easier. I also have a younger one too so it would last a while for pony rides.
