I have a coming up for 3 year old cob. He's quite short & rather wide. I'm sending him away for backing next year & needs a saddle. Adjustable would be great.

What recommendations are there for short & wide cobs?

SMART Saddles Native. Fully flexible, will allow for the many changes he will go through as he matures and workload increases, will allow him to develop a healthy back and will do him for life.

If your rider is small enough, Thorowgood Pony Club Saddle with adult length flaps.

I bought one for Bo (Fell pony) for backing and he's still in it now. I've tried several other leather saddles on him since but this is the only one he's happy in.

Changeable headplate saddles are rarely the best option for wider/flatter backs. Please, if you can, work with a specialist wide horse fitter - with a young horse you need to be seeing your fitter a lot, and have a good relationship with them. Whatever they can provide, or recommend, in terms of a specialist wider horse/pony saddle with a wooden tree. but used, will then be able to be maintained by that fitter. You can end up with a saddle that a fitter really doesn't like, even if it "fits" by some metric - https://stephaniebloomsaddlefitter.co.uk/blog-and-resources/why-cant-saddle-fitters-agree

Hi, so would you recommend treeless saddles like the SMART ones for flatter, wider cobs?

Potentially but it's really down to the horse and rider combo and the brand, treeless saddles vary hugely.

I've fitted treed for 15 years, average (average!!) width around xxw, and they work great, no issues with width at all, or tree shape. I have my preferences, and have actually taken on a treeless brand to add to my two treed, but it's very hard for me to say more as it's classed as advertising.

I have my fitter out on Monday to measure for a saddle so I know what to look for. I've now since backed youngster without a saddle so just bareback but I'm on !!
I have had a saddle on girthed up and moving about with it on but afraid to get on as I don't think saddle fits.
