Just wanting some peoples opinions on whats best to do..

so my mare is getting to point where shes due for a new saddle is 4 years old but is MASSIVELY growing still.. know im confused which route to go down.. either way saddle will be fitted by a professional.. but do i get a cheaper second hand saddle which will fit her for maybe say next year or so max or do i get a brand new one with changeale gullet systems..

havent heard anyone who has used the changeable gullet systems in leather saddles and for youngsters?? any help or advice on best route to take......

confused about which is the best route to take and what have others done when there youngsters have been growing... Thanks in advance

I bought an Amerigo for my 4 year old. It doesn't have interchangeable gullets, but I was told it could be adjusted to fit my horse as she grew. Sadly I had to sell her before she changed that much, but it was the nicest saddle I ever have (or will) own. The WOW I liked also but it is not for everyone and not as nice as the Amerigo. To start with as a three year old she had a wintec which was fine for her until she was doing a little bit more work at 4.

Just want to quickly add that all three I sold on e-bay quickly and for good prices when the time came to sell.

I bought a Kent and masters last year for my girl and love it, they have changeable gullets so should be able to adapt as she grows and are leather!! Also not too expensive for a new saddle! Good luck with your youngster!

I think it depends on what your saddler has in stock - not all adjustable gullet saddles fit all horses (I've sen plenty that don't!) but conversely they may not have anything second hand that fits. I personally would opt for second hand over a synthetic tree with changeable gullet, especially for very wide horses, but also do bear in mind that if you work with a fitter who works this way, most traditional wooden treed saddles can be adjusted a little a few times and may well be enough to stay fitting your mare for quite some time. A used saddle of this nature though is more of a risk to alter as you don't know the history of it so it tends to only apply to new saddles.

Go for whatever fits her. Damage caused otherwise is not worth it. If she's the right shape for a changeable gullet then great - although it does only change the front!

My boy has just had his first new saddle at the age of six. We have been through 3 second hand ones all of which were fitted but he changed shape so much.
