Our 14.3 horse needs a jumping saddle, we have the problem that the only cheap jumping saddles available are only 17" or bigger and he is 16" at a push.

The John Whitaker pony jumping saddles fit him perfectly but we can't afford them, even second hand they're over £1000!

Does anyone know of small jumping saddles which are not riduclously priced because they have Whitaker's name on them?

Been to like 5 saddlers! Its so frustrating they just keep saying you can get one made for him and we was like yeah we'd be better off getting the Whitaker one!

Might just have to save like crazy and get a second hand one off ebay. I should have got a bigger horse :D

I think Henri de rivel saddles common in a 16" - never seen one so don't know what quality is like i'm afraid

Some of them are very expensive its so annoying we wanted the Griffen synthetic jumping saddle as it was £400 so affordable but thats the one that doesn't come under 17"!

Borrowing my friends Jaguar saddle atm! It is the best thing evr but I think they're like £25k! If I had that much money I'd buy a lorry and a horse not a saddle :)

I'll have a look at Henri de rivel but they sound costly :p

you need to look for the old genuine ones and not the tat that is produced under the shires name.....

Thanks for all the help, we have just looked at the Henri de Rivel saddles and they look brilliant and are not to expensive. Our saddler is also bringing a bates saddle to try which are also cheapish.

Fingers crossed atleast one fits!

I used to have a Stubben Rex (pony jumping/gp saddle - more jumping cut than gp) in 16/16.5" (this was the largest they made them in). Was a fab saddle only sold it when I lost the horse aged 32 !! Can you look for a secondhand one of these (sold my at auction for £350, not bad as only paid £260 for it trade !!). but it was a few years ago. There may be some about - found 2 on ebay.

What about a Kent & Masters, or a secondhand jump saddle of some description?

What reasons (apart from funds) do the saddle fitters give you for not being able to provide a saddle off the peg, that will fit? is your horse an awrkward shape, meaning that it is difficult to fit a saddle that is forward cut?- if you know or are given these answers, it may help you! good luck, hope you get it sorted- buying saddles can be a real headache, but when you get the right one, you will just know!

The saddles that we can afford only come in 17" or bigger and our boy is 15.5"/ 16" as the saddle company assumes small horses don't jump big enough to need jumping saddles. He actually has quite good conformation so practically any saddle we put on him fits him its just the fact that most are too long for him as he's 14.3 :p

Wintec do a jumping saddle in 16" for £280 with cair, £260 flocked, wouldn't something like that do you until you can afford a better one. Just because they have 'the' name doesn't necessarily make them better than everything else, we have a Stubben jumping saddle that from day one has been the most uncomfortable saddle I have ever sat on. I would rather have my wintec any day!
