Im having real trouble trying to find a saddle that suits my boy. He has a prominent (long and high) wither and spine, with quite a lot of wastage. Have tried a saddle company saddle and a Fhoenix Standard but both has caused soreness.

What should I try next?

Sue Carson with Flair fitted (We have a Harmony), that way you can have it easily adjusted as your horse muscles up - they can also change the trees longer term. Only problem is they are not cheap, unless you can find a second hand one - although her latest saddles look better than her older ones in my opinion. Have a chat with the local rep, they will give you advise.

My mare was like this when I first got her last year. Her withers were very high and prominant and she had great big dips either side due to muscle wastage and general lack of condition, so I thought theres not point getting an expensive leather saddle when she is going to change shape so I opted for the Thorowgood T6 Leather look High Wither GP which fitted her perfectly. These saddle have been designed in mind for older horses and high withered TB type and ex race horses. After 8 months of bringing her back into work and feeding her up the dips have almost disapeared and are covered in muscle and her withers and spine are not so prominant. I am now on the look out for a descent leather saddle now she is back to how she should be. I hope this helps!

Another vote for the Thorowgood hi wither. They are very well designed and do fit well on TB types. The sue carson saddles i have seen tend to be very narrow in the gullet, so inadequate room for the spine. If you can afford one then the best by far would be a WOW. If you find a good fitter near you they can take an equiform which is like a cast of the back. The makers then make a saddle for your horse and I know they can do one for a long and high withered horse. The adjustable headplate and flair means you can adjust if needed. They are £1600 though! If you cant stretch to that then a Thorowgood at about £350 is great value.

My lad was like this when we got him last year. We've got him in a WOW and he's muscled up lovely. They are expensive though. We didn't buy new. We got the dressage, barely used but second hand, from our fitter for £1k and the jump saddle off eBay for £850. Although I did have to wait an age until one came up on eBay with the right panels, seat and flaps.
