Hi all,

I need advice! I have tried over 8 saddles for my horse and the only one that fits is a Comfort Four Star Jump saddle, but my problem is that I want to compete in all disciplines. The thigh blocks can be removed so will this allow me to compete in all disciplines?

Thanks in advance :)

I would try a few more. Telling you it's for you to work out probably means "no it's not suitable really but if you're desperate enough you'll use anything for dressage, SJ, XC". I lost count of the amount of saddles I tried but it is worth shopping about till you find something good. Why were the others no good? Does your horse have difficult conformation?

"for you to work out"? Personally I'd work it out by getting a different saddle fitter! Whereabouts are you? See if you can get anyone on here to recommend a sensible one who will find a saddle to fit you and your horse, or else make one.

I would say they asked you to work it out so you make the decision and release them from any comeback if you realise you made the wrong decision

I agree with a few of the others, call another fitter who will spend some time trying to sort it out

I would expect it will be good to SJ and Xc and hack and do bits of flatwork, but if you get serious about your flatwork you will probably want to get a dressage saddle more suitable for it, but thats the case with any jumping or even a GP saddle. Even if you take the thigh blocks out it doesnt solve the knee roll, flap position, leg length issues if you see what I mean.

Its perfectly possible to do all disciplines in a jump saddle but it will be a compromise.
Personally i would find another fitter- the fitter should help you decide not just say its up to you to decide. You should work as a team.

I think I'm going to get the saddle as so far we've only doing basic schooling - aiming for prelim/novice in the coming months. Then maybe, if I feel I want to go for it, get a dressage saddle!

I have heard that jump saddle "hurt" the horses back, and should literally only be used for s-j, is that true?

(Oh and yes a new saddle fitter is on the cards!)

It depends on the panel. if the saddle is a close contact design then yes, it should only be used for a very short time- not general daily use. Thats because close contact saddles arent designed for being used for more than a short period so they can cause a sore back if used for normal riding.

I personally would be finding myself a different saddle fitter! They are at the end of the day experts in their profession and if they can't help you, which he obviously can't or he wouldn't have said it's up to you, then I would have zero confidence in them.
