I am currently about to start back my youngster, all flat work done now time to see what he thinks of a rider!!

But am struggling with what saddle to get him, obviously not something expensive as he is only young but preferably one with a changeable gullet. I dont want any issues with ill fitting saddles so thought they might be a good idea. Obviously will get a saddler fitter to come and fit saddle.

Does anyone have experience with the wintec saddles what are they like?
Or can anyone recommend a good saddle?

Thank you

I would go for a thorowgood over a wintec, the wintec tree shape does not suit alot of horses and dont forget that whilst you can widen etc the gullet, this does not change the tree shape or width so adjustable saddles will not fit all horses. Best bet is to speak to a saddler.

I had the same problem with my youngster! In the end, on the advice of my saddler bought a nice cheap maxam (he said the shape of the tree was really good for youngsters) i got a new one because they now come with an adjustable gullet as well. he was perfectly fine in it but I had problems when I started to get on. Eventually got him going ok in walk but when I tried trotting he just exploded. After a few non-horse-related problems I ended up sending him to be professionally backed, where they used and old 'squidgy' saddle that pretty much fitted every horse, and he was so much better in it. I now have a second hand wintec that fits him lovely now but wouldn't have done when he was only just 4 due to the shape of the tree.
If I could do it all again I would buy a cheap second hand saddle that fits really well at the time, and just keep changing saddles as horse grows. Would probably be cheaper and better for the horse in the long run.
Either that or find a friend who has a 'squidgy' fits all saddle who will lend it to you for a few months!

I have same dilemma as you and have just found norton saddle synthetic and leather on ebay wich is supposed to have flexible tree.It comes in different widths maybe this is option for us:D
