Went to ride tonight and when I put saddle on noticed it didn't look right. Back of saddle, padded part on the right hand side was okay but the left side seemed to have gap underneath and wasn't touching horses back. Took off and removed saddle cloth and put on again and there still seemed to be a gap. Ask a friend to have a look and she agreed there was a slight difference in the way saddle fitted on left than on the right. So horse back in stable and will call out saddler tomorrow to come and check. However horse has felt a bit stuffy, on left rein last two times ridden (sat & sun) but he was quite happy to work long and low. I wondered if the saddle was the reason, however didn't notice the change in fit at weekend. I've never seen a saddle not fit like that before. Am going to get back person out as well but wondered if any on here could shed some like on what could have caused this. Sorry if this is a bit long.

I might be very wide of the mark (& forgive me if I'm wrong) but do you sit straight in the saddle or do you tend to tilt to one side slightly? Even if it's subconsciously?

That may explain why the saddle has a slight gap on one side because if you were tilting it would flatten the flock over time on the relevant side?
But if that was the case I'd expect you to have noticed it before now!

Bit mystifying.

My guess is a pure stab in the dark but I definitely think you've done right calling the saddler out.

it sounds like the saddle is bridging. and it could be horse`s muscles developed different on one side to the other
or it could be the saddle is lop sided or twisted(do you use a mounting block?)

could be lots of things.

thanks for replying, saddler is coming out on Saturday, was earliest could arrange as working every night until Friday.

Saddles hasn't been dropped, only had it 8 months bought 2nd hand but not used if that makes any sense.

Always get on from either mounting block or fence never from ground. I did wonder if his back muscles had changed, he's not had a lot of work recently due to either work or illness so suppose he could have lost muscle definition.

Interesting you should say that cos I do occasionally collaspe to inside when circling usually to left, have to make conscious effort to stay straight, like I said not noticed change in saddle before, not saying there hadn't been but like to think I would have noticed.
Will wait and see what saddler says, hope don't need new saddle as really like this one, and I could do without expense!!
