I have recently had a saddler out to my warmblood and his saddle is too narrow down the gullet channel. He has a wide spine (at least 4 fingers in width) and my saddle can only fit 3 fingers between the panels. He is a sensitive lad and won't tolerate much if it is sore, at least he let's me know!

Question is, does anybody have any recommendations for a jump saddle similar to my Equipe that accommodates a wide spine in the channel width? Struggling to find one at the moment.

Thanks in advance!

I struggled with this with my mare - ironically it was an Equipe I found that fitted.

The only other saddle I've tried on her that had enough space in the gullet was a Frank Baines Elan. TBH though I think it's just your luck as to how the saddle was made, even the same make and model can differ between individual saddles.

I have an Albion that has a wider gullet, it was made that way when I had a fitting and then ordered the saddle. I also have longer saddle flaps on it, so if you're buying new you shouldn't have a problem getting it made with a wider gullet. I paid no more for these alterations.

I have a Ken Taur Eventer II , it is also adjustable. There are several widths and obviously the wider ones have larger gullets. very good position too you feel in the middle of it.

IF you have enough width across the panels, your Saddler can alter the width by opening it up a bit. I used to do this job a lot round stables on site where the channel on saddles had naturally closed up over time. You do so many in the end you can do it with your eyes shut!
As long as you have enough bearing surface in the panels and they are correctly flocked up when you have finished you'll have the support and lift for it to work.
Most Saddlers have this job to do on a regular basis so will be able to determine if it would work with your existing saddle.
