My saddler advised that it would be a good idea to use a half pad under my saddle as my horse has just dropped off a little over winter and due to the fact he's gone from dressage to hacking horse.
It's being reflocked aswell.
I do have a Lemieux half pad which I bought a few years back but never really used because it irritates me!
I don't like faffing with two saddle cloths and just always find it never seemed to sit quite right.
So I wondered if I get a half sheepskin lined saddle cloth, will it basically be the same minus the irritance? ;)

I don't think it will have the same effect in that it won't be as wide/bulky enough under the saddle to help your problem . I'm currently doing the same and hate it , I've found the best way is to place the saddlepad on first then the half pad then the saddle . If I try and put it on attached it ends up sitting all wrong .

Yeah, a prolite was the other thing I looked at. Such a shame as the sheepskin one is beautiful and maybe more worn in would be great but it's big and stiff and just all a bit awkward.
Ah well!

Mattes do a great sheepskin half lined numnah - works fantastically well and is as thick as a normal half pad

I've always been too scared to wash mine as it was so new and lovely!
I think that's really probably what it needs tbh.
I've just taken advantage of PE's sale and ordered a few basic cotton saddle cloths and a shock absorbing correction pad. Similar to a prolite used without the inserts but cheaper! I don't need all the shims but may come in handy in the future!

Have you looked at nuumed's range of saddlecloths? They either do the Pro-plus or the shimmed ones. Both should give you the lift you require without increasing the bulk under the leg. Although I tend to use a polypad type saddle cloth to do the job you require.

I think it would work if you get the right pad. I saved up and treated my horse to a half lined bartl saddlecloth. Was much thicker than I assumed it would be and it had to go on ebay as it was too much under my saddle. In comporison nuumed's woolpile stuff is quite flat.

My TB is ridden either in a half sheepskin le mieux numnah, or else a pollypad plus prolite.

EIther of these options seem to give the same thickness...

My last horse needed a similar arrangement. I used a le mieux half pad, which has long straps, on top of usually a le mieux saddlecloth that attaches to the d-rings. I used to lift the whole lot on and off together and never had a problem with things moving around.

I had a le mieux prosorb pad (like a prolite not fluffly) and it had little loops on the front that you threaded the saddle cloth straps through to keep it in place. It never moved and was not a faff at all.
