im just about to deck out a new tack room (such fun) and i remember reading somewhere that the classic Stubbs style saddle racks are bad for saddles …

a) was I dreaming?
b) cos I d really like the vintage style saddle racks that are just like wooden poles
and
c) does this apply to western saddles too?

thanks

Yes, the Stubbs frame ones damage the panels.

Yes, an antique pole rack would be perfect.

I do not possess a Western saddle, but when I was travelling, most trailers seemed to be fitted out with pole racks. I would double check though, in case my memory is faulty!

ETA - they were more substantial than the little pole racks sold here though!

Yep, pole racks are the way to go.

I had the others and ended up needing to put the livingroom cushions on them to stop them dentig the panel.

Lucky you, I'm imagining those vintage tack rooms you see on Pinterest now.

Pole rack but make sure you can lift the saddle on and off, don't slide it. Stubben ones need to be padded with an old pillow, not just piping foam (makes wider, shallower dents!) and even wooden racks can be at the wrong angle and eventually squish the panels at the top/front usually. An old pillow and duct tape can work wonders on all sorts of racks, not pretty though!

I was thinking of these??

I had the 'bad' type of racks. If you cut the offending metal back flush with the wall plate then the 'pole' which is left works perfectly well. Probably not worth the effort for just one rack but I had 12 and subsequently replaced them a couple at a time.

If you are looking for inspiration for a tack room see if you can see the saddle room at the French National Stud (Harras du Pin). It is just gorgeous!
