I'm on the lookout for a 17" xxw saddle for a flat backed cob to do some jumping in.

Does anyone have anything going, or can anyone recommend makes/brands/styles to go for?

Thanks!

Lisa

You're best looking for a working hunter saddle . Anything with too much forward cut will usually slip back on a cob especially if they have big shoulders which they usually do ! My wee guy is a coloured cob x Welsh pony and I use an ideal Ramsay on him for everything . Have also previously used native pony company and oakfield saddles.

How big do you jump?

I love my Farrington saddle on mine, however it's GP style and I do struggle anything over 3ft or xc as my knees come over the knee rolls at the shorter length I need then at.

Given up on a jump saddle as he's too short backed, quit big shoulders and I'm too tall to find one that would suit us without spending a fortune! We rarely jump over 3ft other than playing at home so we just tolerate it now.

Aha! I have EXACTLY what you're looking for: a XXX wide Albion Working Hunter saddle which fitted my flat backed mare who sadly died at nearly 20 just after Xmas. It is a much loved and superbly comfortable saddle that needs a loving home. I have PM'd you....

Alternatively, if you can find one 2nd hand (they're not made any more) a Thorowgood Selecta in the cob model would suit you, it comes in xxw. It's straight cut for the shoulder but you can change the knee pads on the saddle to jumping ones, to give you a forward cut flap with jumping blocks. I don't mean changing the velcro blocks that come with synthetic saddles, I mean the actual saddle flap which on the Selecta can be swapped over very easily. If the saddle is complete it should come with 3 sets, one for dressage, one for hacking and one for jumping.

My XXXXXXXXXXW hippo/horse loves his solution saddles smart native GP saddle. Perfect for all-round riding. They also do a jump version too, if you want more forward cut. They also offer a rental service, so you can truly try before you buy.

It's the only horsey product that I can whole-heartedly recommend.

I disagree that you need a straight cut, I fit jump saddles on big shouldered cobs on a fairly regular basis, and GPs more often than WHs. It's all about having a flat tree (which gives more room and makes jumping easier, unlike many regular GPs with deeper seats), the right shaped panel, seat length, and girthing options as well as skilled flocking. An upswept panel design can help to get a bigger seat size on a shorter back. There aren't many options for super wide horses, many massively wide saddles are designed to be padded up and are actually better for horses with muscle wastage etc as they're not actually all that flat, and tend to have big rear gussets which don't always work on cob shapes. They can be unstable.
