Saddle sells for £19000.

 !!!
*cough* I err... I think my old saddle stuffed at the back of the garage was once been sat on by... ummmm... the Queen. Yup that's right, the Queen *cough cough*
That'll be £19,000 please :D

Just read the article and it seems like it was a saddle CLOTH, not even a saddle!!

Anyone with a regal bum like to sit on one of my tatty (I mean antique) saddle cloths? Christmas is coming and could do with a bit of extra cash!!

Not sure about the cursed bit though..............

It's an early side saddle- well a side saddle cover at least :)

I blogged about it the other day and was hoping that I would have won the Euromillions before the auction to bid for it for my own collection but sadly, I didn't or else it would have gone MUCH higher than £19 000 if I were bidding! :D

The "curse" is tongue in cheek, it was hilarious reading it!

My old saddle is not only haunted by the ghost of a pagan warlock, but it also has a goblin living under the saddle flap - does this mean it's worth more??? :D

Looking at the picture - and it is a sidesaddle, not just a saddlecloth, BTW - I would be extremely surprised if this was actually a late 16th c. saddle at all. The saddle has two pommels; not known until the 19th century, the style of lace used for decoration is not 16th c., more late 18th c. and the general state of preservation is extremely good for a supposedly 400 year old + saddle. Dodgy. I think someone has paid a LOT of money for a fake.

We were discussing this on the side saddle Facebook group and Laura Dempsey, the side saddler, pointed out that it was indeed a saddle cloth to go over a side saddle, as there was no wear on the velvet from the stirrup leather. She also said that there is an astride saddle which belonged to QEI at Warwick Castle which is also green but more worn than this one.

Becca Holland from the Flying Foxes also said that Catherine De Medici (1519-1589) "was credited with the invention of the second pommel and the forward facing seat, although there is a much earlier Durer picture which seems to show one". So it may very well be from that era but maybe some bits like the lace, were added later on in the 18th century?

It's too bad that they didn't give a seat measurement from the front of the fixed head to the cantle as since the Queen was tall (5'10"), you would be looking at a side saddle measuring about 22"- 23" using this measurement. If the saddle was less than that, then you know that it wasn't hers! :D

I really wish I would have been at this auction to give this saddle a good looking over!

Only if it's a side saddle :D

Mine has all the above AND you have the option of sitting on it sideways.... (in a quarter "round the world" style...) does that make it valuable???

;)
