Could anyone give me some advice please... My gelding is 16.2, his GP saddle is 17.5" so i guessed i was looking for a 17.5" dressage saddle only, but ive been told that because i am small, i could get away with either a 17" or 17.5".

I know its only a 0.5 of an inch but i cant help but think a 17" would look too small for a 16.2 warmblood? Considering a friend of mine (is the same build as me though) has a 17" for her 14.2 cob??? And a 6ft plus friend has a 18.5" saddle for a 16.1hh...

So is the 16-17 or 18" and so on normally just the size of the seat and so for the riders bum only? Not so much for the horse?

Any help please???

Well I'm sure an 18.5 would be too long on a 16.1hh but could be wrong?! If you have quite a small bum I'm sure you'd be fine on a 17 inch, but pref go for a 17.5, more room to spread your weight on the back.

There is a certain distance that must not be passed between the back of the saddle and the horses loin. A shorter saddle will be fine, but a larger saddle could well cause pain to your horse.
As Amymay says though, what does your saddler say?

i have a 16.2 and she has an 18" saddle when my OH rides her. i use a 17" on her, but im quite little and theres loads of room in that for me, my seat suits a 16 1/2" better

just make sure you dont go beyond the 18th thoracic vertebra (on last rib)

My saddler was the one that said i could go for a 17 as well as a 17.5, i know he knows best but i just wanted to check with you lot
