Hi everyone. I have a stubben which measures 8 inches between d rings. Is this wide? Medium? What size would this be in terms of stubben sidings? (Not stamped on saddle). I have done a wither tracing on my horse and he's about 9 inches wide. He is a TB! That's really wide isn't it?
Thanks ;)

Have you looked for width stamped on the girth guard? Stubben do it on most of their saddles, it is a number from 27 (very narrow)to 32 (very wide) rather than words to describe the width

Thanks so much for replying. Well it has a stamp but when I emailed it to stubben they said it wasn't clear what size it was!! It does have 32 within the numbers so maybe it's a 32? ;)

Stubbens do saddle widths from 27 to 33 - the mid range 28-31 are the most common. They always stamp the width on the off side girth guard, up on the top.

Measuring saddle widths from D to D seems to be the fashionable way to sort saddle widths, but it is completely nonsensical - different saddlers put the D rings at different places on the front of the saddle, and it takes no account of the thickness of the stuffing either - you have to be at least measuring like with like (ie both saddles the same make and style) for it to have any relevance.

When you say your horse's wither tracing is 9", where are you measuring it? Across the middle, across the end points? Where would you measure the saddle for the equivalent measurement??

My OH is a saddler fitter and gets quite frustrated with the "D to D" measurements!

Thanks so much. That's a great bit of info. I have a problem in that I'm in Ireland and there doesn't seem to be any decent 2nd hand saddlers/ saddle fitters and I'm having trouble getting a proper saddle that fits. I bought a flexi curve and took a wither tracing 2/3 inches behind his shoulder at the wither. I then traced this onto paper and measured a line 3 inches below this. I understand this will then tell me what size gullet I should be looking for?? :) thanks again, you're so kind helping. I really appreciate it. The saddle
I have doesn't seem to sit on him well and I don't like riding in it (not really comfy) so I need to ideally trade it in. He's a new horse to me, he's been in the field since August getting fat and well so actually his wither measurement might get smaller?!! As he gets fitter. He's a TB but he's a monster, he looks more like a sport horse and is so fat now. ;)
Need to get working him now, hence the saddle issue!!! ;)
