Hi Forum members,

I have fallen foul of a dodgy saddler in the Kent region and wanted to warn other people so they can hopefully avoid the situation I have ended up in.

My usual saddler was so busy that I decided to look for an alternative in my area. I purchased two new horses who were just going to be happy hackers so I thought a decent made to measure saddle might be a good alternative than a brand.

Sure enough at the chance of new business the saddler, Ian Jenkins of Minster Saddlery was out like a shot. He measured up and off he went, the first saddle appearing 6 weeks or so later. I was actually quite pleased at this point. The saddle I felt was good quality, and it fitted nicely, so far no problems.

When it came to order the second saddle the first one looked like it needed reflocking. Out he came again like a shot for a sale of a new saddle, he measured up cast a courtesy glance over the other saddle and off he went, appearing 6 weeks later with a new saddle, which again I was very pleased with.

Now the saddles are in desperate need of altering due to the horses changing shape over the Summer, I feel I have been led a merry dance and he is not at all interested in coming out to alter. I contacted him early May and he told me he was not in my area for awhile instead covering Essex and Herfordshire. I stupidly thought, oh ok, I will just wait .. a few more phone calls at 2-3 weekly gaps still resulted in him not being in my area that a few weeks ago I got so annoyed having now missed most of the Summer being stuck with saddles which do not fit I asked him curtly that surely if I paid him to be in my area then would that not mean he would be available at whatever date this may be in the future? So we booked in for the 27th July at 12.30pm. Come 1pm he had not arrived, I sent him a message asking how late he would be and he replied straight back and said we had agreed the 3rd August. Now I know for definite that is not the case. I took a day off work especially to be at home for him as I really wanted to get these saddles sorted.

So another week went by, yesterday comes and I take another day at home, this time advocating I am working from home .. the horses are in waiting and again he does not turn up. I send him a message asking how late he will be and no reply. I call 3 times, he doesn't answer. I am now guessing he is and was never interested in any alteration service I needed. Whether he had any intention of turning up I do not know. I feel really betrayed and foolish.

I am now stuck with 2 saddles which I do not want to use as they are too tight. I am really disappointed that I fell for using this company .. a warning to others .. do your research before using someone new like I did .. it will pay off in the end. These saddles were over £700 each and whilst I am still quite happy with the quality I am now stuck with 2 saddles which I do not want to use on my poor horses .. I guess I will now be only riding in the Winter when they are slimmer ..

Whilst I agree that you haven't got good service from this guy, it is quite usual for horses to change shape from season to season, and depending on their level of work. I have had my mare for 41/2 yrs and we are on her 4th saddle. Not such a problem for me as I have used saddles that were already in my tackroom.
There is no reason why you can't ask a different saddler to alter your saddles, which is what I would do. If yours are Saddle Company Saddles (which I am guessing from the m2m price), you could/should complain to the company, they may be able to recommend someone else. I have had an independent saddler reflock my SC saddle though.

Agree- just get someone else to re-flock and adjust.
I know exactly what you mean, though, about poor customer service...I have a similar issue today but not with a horsey thing. Had a cooker installed at great expense and am now having major problems trying to get them to come and fix it now it doesn't work.

We have M2Ms for our horses but they are 'air bags' not flocking - and the saddler is excellent. Makes such a difference to work with people who are reliable!

I should have said that my usual saddler did come out to reflock two albions I bought from him early June so I asked him to take a look at these Minster saddles, but he told me they were too far out to adjust. He advised that Minster might be able to swap them for something that fits better. So in theory he would have got more business had he have come out as I would have put these 2 saddles in part exchange for two new ones. It seems it is a Father and Son company and there are no other saddlers to send out.

He's not, I checked that last night to see if there is someone I could complain to. It is just a father and son company .. I have learnt my lesson the hard way! x

This sounds like one for trading standards, the company state they will reflock and adjust as required free of charge, probably just the first time after the saddle has settled but you have not even had that done yet, free of charge or otherwise , they GUARANTEE the saddle will fit and that should be enough to get them back out asap.

Much as I hate rogue traders I think this does not sound so bad from what you have typed here.

You ordered two saddles that you were very happy with, and he attended promptly. You say they fitted at the time of sale? Did you have a template at home so you can see how much your horse has changed?

He was then not keen to come out, but made an appointment that it seems was subject of a misunderstanding. Was the second appointment confirmed, as you texting and him saying that he thought he was coming on the 3rd was not an appointment, unless it was confirmed?

I would, however, screen shot the web site, and if you do not trust this saddler I would have an independent person out to assess the saddle and its suitability. As you were initially happy with the saddle though, and have declared this publicly, I doubt you will be able to prove it was not suitable when sold - unless it is way out like an 18inch saddle on a 13.2.

Maybe if he knows you are considering a P/ex he would be prompt again, if you do still trust him? It does sound though that once he has sold the saddle he will not be reliable to re-flock, is there a more local saddler to do this? I bought my saddle from a supplier who would not then come out to adjust, and use a local saddler if I need to.

Thank you for all your replies - I was feeling so miserable and disappointed - I will be in touch with trading standards with a copy of their website page where they say they come out to reflock for free! Thank you again to all of you who have replied!

This has happened to me too (although not the same master saddler), new saddle, yes there like a shot, but a for follow ups - just not interested....
