I have a saddler coming tomorrow because beastie isn't 100% herself and I'd like to have her checked. What is he likely to want to do and what questions should I ask?

Any advice greatfully received from a saddle fitting virgin.

He will want to check down your horses back, will want to check how the saddle sits and will want to see the horse ridden in both walk and trot and possibly in canter. This will be done without any numnah/saddlecloth etc.

He should also ask lots of questions about the age and level of work of the horse, and also about whether she is above or below the weight that is normal for her. He might also put a flexible strip over the back just behind the wither to take a pattern of the horses back which is then drawn onto a sheet of paper as a record of the shape of the back, so that for future visits he can see if the back is changing shape. This is also useful to see on paper if each side of the back is equally developed.

your saddlr should have explained to you what to expect butthey will want to see hore clean and run up in hand to assess gait and confirmation regarding saddle fit. then see you ride in existing saddle if adjusting it or trial new saddles for fit both horse and you. make sure they are an sms qualified fitter for full insurance and training visit societymastersaddlers website or saddle world online for more info what to expect! (i am not a saddler friend who is master saddler and qualified saddle fitter posted this for u!)
