Do you have a main stream saddle or one designed with natives in mind? I have a good general purpose but tend to ride a bit one sided and wonder if a native one will help me as mine does slip a little,
My mum has (rather fat) section Ds. At least 1 has a highland cob saddle and other has xxxxxxxxxxxxxL side- both slip so not sure makes much difference.
Perhaps something with different shaped pads would help tho - see the WOW web site
i have got a W- XW pony. at the moment she has a wintec wide saddle with the narrowest plate. i have found that for canter work, or jumping i MUST have my limpet pad and stubben cord girth on. otherwise the saddle slips forward (she has a large bellybehind the girth area which doesnt help, plus is bum high and has no wither!)
i am looking into trying an ideal WH saddle on here to see if they are suitable
I have a Farrington dressage saddle on my Dales - however there is a saddlery company called the Native Pony Saddle Company - I've heard good reports about them, and obviously their saddles are designed with wide natives in mind! - Their website is http://saddleexchange.com/prod_native.shtml
I have a huge range of saddles for mine, I only have New Forset ponies, too many to ride at once!. I found the wintecs, even the wide ones did not have a wide enough weight bearing surface over the back of the saddle, and some were narrow in the gullet going back, this meant it didn't sit right, and was almost perched at the back and fine over the shoulders. I have found that WH/VSD saddles fit better, i can pretty much pick up off the shelf 2nd hand what will fit and get it flocked. I have a Jeffries brahman, which is one of their cheaper models, and is straight cut, which is good for the big shoulders I have seen it advertised as a 'childs' saddle but it's 17" though my dad rides in it and he's not little. It fits anything, but can move a bit, but it is not as bad as some I have had. One thing I would suggest is to get a saddle with 4 girth straps, i have a thorogood griffin cob which rarely moves on the lump, he is XXW at worst, has a flat back and no withers, he is a real chunk of a forrester with huge shoulders, and has 3 saddles, as he changes shape so much.
I also use the humane girths, which I feel they help. and an appropriate numnah/saddle cloth. I know if I use a thick one on Cops the saddle will move
What I really want is an old barnsby Pony Club, not straight cut but fab... my friend has one and I used to steal it alot... fits everything I have, sometimes with a bit of padding (ssh) and never moved, even hanging off my 2 table tops, or my aunts cob!
Also if your saddle moves slightly to one side tie your horses main up so you can see his wither/back, and make him stand square. He may actually be slightly built up more on one side then the other muscle wise, which is a flocking/schooling thing more than a saddle.
Sorry for the long waffely post. But I have had 100's.
I can also recomend, Ideal, and Kes, none of which I own, and I have a few cheap/unbranded ones that are good too.
I found the Wintec wide rotated on my Highland. I have a very cheap imported XW saddle on her now that fits perfectly..doesn't look very nice but does the job.
The dales x is just wide and has a Silhoutte WH saddle

One of the 1/2 panel ones?? just sold one of those as I was desperate for room. And it went for a bargain price too.
Fudge is a welsh D (with very little whither and a table top back) and he has a made to measure Ideal Event with a point strap to eliminate slipping, It fits great and is lovely and comfortable and looks really smart, it cost £800 but Fudge's shoulders make it difficult for him to have an off the peg saddle
I have 5 natives. My cobbies share a Samber Working Hunter which seems to fit boths really well and a western saddle. Daughters pony was hard to fit but now has a Saddle Company saddle which fits beautifully. Had terrible trouble with slipping before that. Little welshie always had a cub saddle and shettie has a little synthetic till I get him his own.
I use the Native Pony Saddle Company for my Fells and their saddles are great. I am having problems with one of my ponies just now though even with those saddles - keeps moving up his neck. Up until current issue, I wouldn't look at anything else, but I'm getting frustrated with trying to get the saddle to stay in one place.
Major advantage with NPSC is they use flat trees which are much more suited to native pony backs than the slightly curved trees used by most other saddlers.
I use a Thorowgood Cob saddle and have had no problems at all. It has a changeable gullet too for if he puts more weight on (by eating another blade of grass)!!!!
i have a farringtons whp saddle on my fat connemara (600kg at his heaviest and only 14hh) everything else moved on him, but with this saddle it wont move an inch. I dont normaly use a numnah or saddle pad, but it does have 4 straps.
hi i have large sec ds and have 3 saddles for them flyde ray sabre wh and symonds wh all are on the same tree and all are fantastic saddles for mm types and comphy too , i am gutted at the mo as my wide sabre is a little long at 17 1/2 on one of them and i am going to have to consider selling it but it will be replaced by nothing other than another sabre or a symonds or a ray in a shorter size.i also used a black anti slip pad at all times saddle s never move .
Yes Katy, exactly that saddle! the only ones I have seen have been dire ie needed new seat/saddle flaps and £overpriced. needed to be at least a wide tho.
