Sorry in advance this may turn into a long one!! I've got to the stage where my rising 5 mare needs saddle checking again. Obvisouly this is fine, but I have really lost faith in saddlers:

First off, I had a lady out (who i have seen good reviews for on here...) to fit her a saddle when i was backing her, appreciating that she was likely to change shape quickly, but not wanting to back her in some old saddle that was a terrible fit. So she came out, spent roughly 45 mins with us (half of that was reflocking my other ponies saddle). When fitting my mare she didnt even do the girth up on the saddle and made more of a fuss over her conformation - saying she has a very forward girthline and that i would really struggle to get a saddle that didnt move forward on her, so as part of her service she added a point strap. Overall i didnt particulary enjoy the experience

, she was rude and i rather got the impression that she didnt give a sh*t!! So anyhow, saddle moved forward (as far forward as right at the bottom of her neck) and she wasnt prepared to come out without me having to pay another fee - out of principal i thought no way, surely she should have come out a couple of weeks after to check all was ok (maybe niave of me but I've been riding since day one and can always remember saddlers coming back out to check the saddles we had fitted!).

Anyhow, onwards...so I had another guy who was recommended to me by old YO, he was lovely and spent ages checking everything. He looked at my other ponies saddle and said it was the worst job of reflocking he had ever seen - the panels were rounded so that it rocked on the back and they were not even. He said that my mare's saddle did fit, however the gullet was too narrow so he took it away and opened it up for me. So we had the saddle back in Jan and it was fine to start with, however after about 6 weeks started shifting forward again

. She then had quite a bit of time off as i was unwell, and have now been riding her again for the last few weeks. So the saddle still shifts forward and i have resorted to using my other ponies saddle on her (which at last visit he advised also fitted her!) as this doesnt move.

Anyway, although i wouldnt class myself as an expert, i dont think this fits her that well now either - she has become slightly rotund!! It is lifting at the back in trot.

Also, in my wisdom, i decided to buy her a wintec dressage saddle and get it fitted by someone - so this arrived this week and have tried it on her, and i'm pretty sure its slightly too narrow (it sits very high on her - i can get my whole hand in between wither and pommel - although i only have small hands!!), yet it lifts quite a lot at the back

. So need someone to come out and look at both (poss all 3) on her - but i dont know what to do, the guy that came out apprantly hates synthetics - is a real stickler for tradition - and i am also so sick of 'her' saddle i want rid of it, yet this is the one he did all the work on!! Plus its a 17inch seat and i am lost in it....so should i get someone else out, or get him out - bearing in mind i cant find his details anywhere on the master saddlers website which worries me slightly....

So confused - i have never known fitting a bloody saddle to be so complicated!!! Maybe my mare is just a really odd shape....

Well done for getting this far, g&t to all!

I would get the guy back out again. If you were pleased with his service and the advice he gave then give him another go. With regard to him not liking synthetics that shouldn't cloud his judgement. The WIntec will either fit or it won't and he shoulf be able to help you with it. I also would not worry regarding whether he is Master Saddlers Registered or not as there criteria for acceptance for completing their training is very strict and hardly anyone is eligible. He is probably very knowledgeable and experienced and will do a good job. However be aware there are cowboys out there.

Good luck!

I'd get him back out. You were happy with the fit to begin with.

And as for him not being on the master saddler website I really wouldn't worry unless he said he was. I've had very bad experience with a master saddler and then the society when I complained. So I don't think much of them at all.

Sadly it's not unusual it seems. Similar experiences led me to going treeless.
In a perfect world I would still love to have a well fitted leather trad saddle.

I understand exactly where you're coming from, but it's just too longwinded to give you all my experiences!

I know use Nathaniel Underwood, he was excellent when we saw him a few years ago, and I saw him again yesterday. If you are interested, you can Google him, he is in the west country.

Thanks for everyone's replies - to be honest, the lady who first came out IS listed on the master saddlers website - yet i thought she was terrible! So maybe I'm better off going for someone who is not lol...I will give him a call and get him out (again!!). I guess I'm just a bit embaressed/worried to say i'm fed up of this saddle (after everything he has done on it!) and want to try sorting out the others to fit her!

I absolutly agree with Lady Luck! There are SMS qualified fitters sometimes Master Saddler (different things) that are not overly good and there are those that do not come under the SMS banner but have experience and more importantly a good eye and feel for saddle fitting. Most horses do not come out of a text book and good saddle fitting shouldn't rely soley on paper qualifications.
I cant remember if you said what your girl is like build wise but if she is a buxom lass and you want synthetic,I think you will find that the Thorowgood cob will suit her better than the wintec. They do a Cob dressage T4 RRP£369. It has changeable gullets like the Wintec and point and balance straps.
A well fitting synthetic is far prererable over a leather one that is not 'quite right' so as Lady luck says should not cloud his judgement!
I would also recommend Margaret Newing for your area she is both good and lovely!! (Her no is 07889 275988)

Like you, been there and got the T Shirt

There are good and bad saddle fitters out there and I'm pleased to say I think I've finally found an excellent one

Unfortunately, he's not in your area! The guy you had out seems OK so as you were pleased with him I'd ask him out again. Good luck

I think some of the problem is that your mare was rising 5, and therefore still maturing. You didnt say whether she was still growing, but when I bought my CBxTB at rising 5 he was 15hh and now he is 15.3hh. In that time he has gone out then up, out then up, and he was an absolute nightmare to fit. Luckily I am a saddle fitter for the Saddle Company, and so I could adjust his saddle for him as he grew, but otherwise the saddle wouldnt fit from 1 month to the next. It also didnt help that he wasnt in regular work, then he was being worked 6 days a week then back down to 2.

You didnt say what breed your horse is, but wintecs dont generally fit anything, and the only thing they remotely fit are tb types. As someone else said, if you have a cob type a thorowgood has a much better tree for flat backed horses.

If you would like, you can pm me pics of your horse with and without the saddles and I can let you know what I personally think of them?

Where do you live, I have a brill saddle fitter - Katie Topping, you will find on the Master Saddlers Associate - she is based in the north west of England
