Posted before but hoping for advice.....

I know this is a bit clueless of me but I hear varying views.

My boy was fitted with a 17.5 MW barnsby GP saddle.

I'm looking on ebay etc for a dressage saddle and I see 18" and 17" etc.

I was told that the " is the rider size but surely if the saddle is too big or small it could sit on the wrong part of the horses back and cause trouble?

I'm sure his earlier saddle (that was stolen) was a 17" or 16 1/2 and he bucked quite a bit in it - was stolen so never got the chance to measure it (came with him).

So saddle fitting gurus, please pass on advice!

Thanks

PS - obviously if anyone has a black secondhand leather dressage saddle kicking around, let me know! x

Absolutely true! If the saddle is too long for the horses back it can cause problems, same as ifthe seat size is too small.

Surely it is less important (for the horse) if the saddle is shorter? As long as a 17 fits you (and I ride in a 17 as my boy has a very short back and you are quite petite) then the 17 should be fine.

If you had a 17.5" saddle fitted professionally, then stick with a 17.5" seat size. Too small a saddle can be uncomfortable for the rider, and can also increase the pressure on the horses back over a smaller area. Too big can offer too little support, and sit on the horses kidneys.

Just spoke to saddler and apparently trees are made by only a few companies so tend to be the same.

Said that if I got a second hand he'd sort flocking if needed.....

Will stick to a 17.5 though... x

Thanks guys
