hello. im currently trying to get a sadle for my horse who has quite big shoulders (TB X Shire), and then a hollowing around his high withers. At the saddle fitters i tried everything, including Prestige, Stubben, Amerigo, Albion abnd everything went backwards!

I just wondered what saddle other people have that have similar shaped horses.
Im trying an equipe and a flocked prestige next week.
Also what can you do to stop then slipping back? ive tried breastgirths but they just get tight as the saddles slip back.

Thank you!!

re: slipping back, if you have a good fitted saddle it shouldnt really slip back...erm, you could try one of those gel pads that go under the saddle and stop slipping? or a hunting breastplate that attches to the D rings on the pommle of the saddle and then down to the girth...so it shouldnt be as bad as a normal breastplate if it tightens slightly?

xx

yeah i had a saddle fitter out (very good) and he said because of his awkward shape everything is going to slip back?
Ive got a 5 point breatsplate that i use XC but would look abit stupid in dressage (we already dont fit in very well!).
I might try one of those gel pads.
Thank you!

My pal's got a Morgan stallion with a massive shoulders - she has something being made by Ideal - it's a Suzannah with a Jessica tree. But like Thistle says, Ideal also do other saddles suitable for large shoulders, not just bespoke.

I have a superb saddler and yet have a horse with this conformation and still have this problem! I use a pessoa legacy XP3 which is pretty good but the best thing I found to really stabilise the saddle is a professional choice girth, I thought my saddler was winding me up when he said the girth would solve the majority of the problem, but he was right!

Agree with this. My horse has great big shoulders and the Ideal fits perfectly.

my horse is awkward to fit as well - except that instead of going in behind the shoulders he is the same width

because of this, everythingis going to slip back on him!!

He has an ideal dressage saddle and a collegiate jumping saddle, both which are great fits but still slip back.

Hi, i have the same problem got a prestige saddle, and now use a gel-eze non slip pad! does not move now! her shoulder very hard to fit as throws everything back!

i use pessoa for jumping and a jaguar dressage for my ridiculously big shouldered eventer- he looks like he has sandbags in front of the saddle!

i tried about 15 different saddles before settling on the jaguar as it was the only one which gave him the freedom through his shoulders.

Two saddles I've found worked well on big shouldered horses - Ideals and Devoucoux - but the Devoucoux only if you absolutely insist on them giving loads of wither clearance, i.e. thicker panels, which can be challenging depending on who you're dealing with. If you're looking for a dressage saddle, the oft overlooked Devoucoux Milady really opens up the shoulders, partly due to the girthing arrangement, and is very comfortable to ride in.

But if you can get an Ideal to fit, I'd go with an Ideal. Possibly worth trying Fusion Saddles as well.

I've just bought an Ideal Event saddle for my Welsh Cob who has padded shoulders and is rather broad.

Everything I've tried so far until this one, has slipped forwards and to the left.

The Ideal doesn't - yippee!!
