I have a 3 1/2 y/o ID/TB and am looking for a saddle for her.

Can anyone recommend particular styles/makes that fit your ID's? She is so wide it's crazy, with a massive shoulder :)

I have a saddler coming this month but I'd like to have a few of my own ideas too.

I had a kent and masters saddle for my then 4 year old cob x tb. She is a big girl with massive shoulders and it seemed to suit her well.

We've had two ID and both of them have been happy in a bates caprilli once the right gullet was in there - but both of ours had finished growing when we got them!

I have popped my saddle on her which is an Albion XW, it is perched on her like one of those saddles you see on an elephant!

Honestly it's like a pea on a mountain, and that is the widest I have. It's like a toy saddle on her!
Absolutely nowhere near wide enough :(

Gosh - that's very wide for a 3 1/2 year old ISH!

My boy (also ISH) has just turned 5 and I bought a Wintec 500 with interchangeable gullet while he grows hoping he will mature into my Albion saddles.......both which fitted my huge Friesian perfectly and she had a dining table back!

I showed him on Sunday and judge asked whether he was pure ID - I know he's put on weight but.......

Good luck - think you need to go down Cob route but she'll change shape so much I wouldn't spend too much until she's matured.

Yes, she does look more ID than anything tbh.

It's so difficult, I don't wantto spend a lot of money, but as she's going to need something so specific I may have no choice.

Thorowgood cob saddle fits well. They're generally a bit wither high for saddles so the cob saddle has a decent depth rear gusset to balance it (useless of most cobs though!)

This would be a good option to try as it would be readily resellable afterwards, so no harm done if/when they grow out of it.

You could also try an Ideal H&C (Highland and cob) - they are so wide that my coblet was an XXW in the Thorowgood but only an XW in the Ideal - so they are veeerrry wide.

Also very sought after so resellable too, tho not so cheap and not easy to find second hand, tho there are some around.

I have seen the TG cob NOT work for an ID shape. It might do, but equally might not. You usually need a decent pommel to give some wither clearance (cob saddles are often low in the wither) but then with a wide seat to give flatness from side to side, and a deepish rear gusset to keep the saddle in balance. Look for reasonably flat panels, though I fid that many saddles designed for wide horses barely have any flock in the front which can cause instability issues, and four girth straps to give you choice on girthing. I don't usually fit ID types in our saddles aimed at natives and cobs specifically, but usually in our more general pleasure and sport horse range.

We have a 3/4 ID who has just turned 5, he is using a Wintec 500 too. Saddler and physio both thing he has a lot of maturing to do so will wait a few years before getting him a nice leather one.

I've just fitted a Romanian cob with a deeper seated saddle in just over an XXW fitting (6 fit). Your ID might be flatter than average in which case I would stick with our natives and cob range, but you may need something more shapely.
