I just wondered if anyone has a horse that has had the KS operation or that currently has kissing spines? If so, what saddle do you use/recommend?
Thankyou
My horse has kissing spines right under the saddle area T15,16 & T17 I use a black country dressage saddle as that is my discipline but you just need to make sure the gulley is extra wide. A lot of people use the WOW saddles, I had one but my gelding didn't get on with it as it moved too much laterally and so caught him slightly. Try to always use a fairly thick numnah too, I use a Stephens real sheepskin & also a Mattes when washing the other, it helps with the sweat in the summer.
Saddle company saddle with serge panels. My saddle gullet had a bit of stuffing removed around the operated area to widen the gullet, to relieve pressure away from that area. He had a nice thick poly pad underneath
You can pick a WoW up on ebay for around £800 thats what I sold mine for last month but you must make sure you know what you are looking for ie with or without tabs, with or without gussets etc have a look on their website as it explains which panels suit which build of horse. It didn't suit my horse as they could never quite get a good enough fit, My horse is rather cold backed when you first get on him, you NEVER tighten the girth once on!!! and you sit really carefully for the first few minutes but the wow always seemed to slip slightly to the side when you put your weight in the stirrup to get up and on, this was not a good move as it then pressed to the side of the kissing spine. The wow fitter said it was his shape. Holstein x ID with huge shoulders, no wither and lots of back muscle from me using the Pessoa for 12 months!!! Incidently he was diagnosed with it as a 7yr old but I didnt go the surgery route as he had injured his hip jumping off an 8ft wall so I felt this would end his top level dressage before the kissing spine. He is 14 now and still schooling 5 days a week at advanced level but because my husband is a Vet I can get him to check him over every so often and use the ultra sound for free!. Good luck
I had my Black Country Saddle adapted by Kay Humphries for my horse who has KS. He'll never do flatwork again but is a very happy hacker and physio said his back is in remarkably good shape bearing in mind his condition, suggesting that he is very comfortable in his saddle. Kay is brilliant at fitting saddles correctly to horses with problems.
