Sister requested i post this...

She has a 16hh welsh x tb mare, just turned 4. She really has the welshy back - low wither, broad and flat back.

Currently using my Kings GP on her which is a medium, back lady not convinced it suits her shape and has recommended she look at either treeless or a haflinger style saddle as they seem to suit this back shape.

Does anyone have experience of these and recommendations? She doesn't mind whether leather or synthetic but doesn't want to break the bank.

She mainly hacks but would want to do pleasure rides and RC stuff.

Help please!

Thats what I recommended she try, and they do a haflinger version for the really wide, but £760 new!!!

Wonder how generous Rideaway are for trade ins!

i hve exactly same type of horse - found treeless just slip and go straight round the side, even with none-slip pads etc, you end up having to do girth up too tight and i personally didn't like it at all (though depends how quiet the horse is and what you'd be doing wiht him, i guess!). My W cob has big shoulders and flat back, and there are two i'd recommend - the thorowgood cob t6, which is synthetic but looks like leather and costs about £400 new (really good for cobs), and also the gallop wide saddles, which are only about £100 new but i cna't understand why as they're SO comfy and really nice - look on ebay for them (I wasn't able to find a saddler selling them, but bought one and got saddler to check it - whihc is a bit riskier but still quite a cheap option). They allow room for shoulder much better than most.

hope you find one!

Really really recommend the Thorowgood maxam cob XXW, my Haffie is great in it!! Has the 4th girth strap and changeable gullet. Cheap and tough and comfy.

If looking at treeless and with ££ then I have a Treefree Exmoor which is fantastic on both the Haffie and 17hh hunter.

I have a GFS VSD saddle for the big chap bought new but was very disappointed with the quality of the leather, it has never really softened up and feels cheap to me.

The other saddle that is great on wide flat cobs and is a beautiful saddle is the Ideal H&C (Highland and Cob) , it is very generous in size so my pone is an XXW in the Thorowgood but only an XW in the Ideal

Hope this helps, its no fun dangling under their tummy by your stirrups!

Nope but I have a Welshy and he has an Ideal Event (I think that's what it is...def an Ideal). Have a look at Ideal, I really really like them and won't break the bank either. I had to have the tree changed in mine when he lost weight and then had it all restuffed to match his shape, but my loaners have it checked every year and it's still spot on for him.

My rescued gipsy cob has spent most of her 12 years popping babies (we think) and is really wide! She's 14.2 and is in a 52" girth! I bought her the new "Wintec Wide" which is designed specially for chunky cobs and comes with a set of 3 interchangeable gullets just in case your horse changes shape a bit. It's just £349 and being synthetic is light and easy to clean. Beautiful deep seat so is as comfortable for the rider as for the horse. As a bonus, it also fits my veteran Section D gelding who I don't think has had any babies (!) but he sure does have his own version of a "mummy tummy" lol x

I have a wide round no wither native. I use a treeless and have had no problems with it slipping I can even mount from the ground if I have to.
I have the phoenix which is not cheap sadly. I used a trekker talent before without any problems.
If you are anywhere near me, I am in the east midlands I would happily bring my treeless over for you to try.

I use an Ideal H&C for my welshie and for hubby's irish cob. My coloured cob has a Jefferies Falcoln VSD in extra wide.

It it helps I have an Ideal Working Hunter saddle for sale - 16.5 inch, wide fitting.

Ideals are fab. I have a W fitting WH on my mare, typical pony shape, little wither, round 'well sprung' ribs.

I did ride a Connie with a Fieldhouse VSD - I HATED that saddle....

I had a made to measure based on the ideal ramsey made for my very large welsh d it is 13" from d ring to d ring the saddler was very reasonably priced, she is in west yorkshire. If you need details pm me

I also would recommend the Ideal H + C. Ideal's are fantastic saddles, especially on broader horses.

The other one worth mentioning is the Wintec Wide.. We used this on an appaloosaXcob filly that was like a table with no withers and it fitted her very well.
