Hey guys, I've got a 15.2hh heavy weight cob gelding who is a real gentleman. my problem is that in the past two weeks I have tried out four saddles on him and none of them fit without slipping. As you can see from the picture he is very flat and has no wiethers what so ever. I have heard of the treeless saddles and was wondering weather or not anybody here has expwerience with them? Because at the moment this seems like the best oprion for us. He's only a hacking horse and I'd like to maybe do the odd show with him. So he's not competion material.

I'd appriciate any help.
Thanks
Nessie.

Have a look at www.totalsaddlesolutions.com - they are imo the best treeless saddles on the market, not cheap, but worth every penny, and one saddle fits anything. I have the Freestyle (gulleted dressage model) and the Jumper, but I saw the new GP recently and it looks really great if you just want something to do everything in. This sort of saddle would be great for your horse as it will still fit him however his shape changes. Hope this helps, pm me if you want more info.

Thanks very much I'll have a look at it, thats a BIG help! Although it's more then I paid for him. I was looking more toward the £400 mark. If any body else has any more suggestions I'd be greatful.

They sometimes have second hand or ex-demo ones for sale on the website, which are a bit cheaper, and they do work out cost-effective cos you are not constantly having to change saddles/get them stuffed or refitted etc, or if you change horses. I have seen the ones that sell for about £500 and they are the word that begins with C and ends with P. Imo! you can get the local agent to come along and give you a test ride as well. Good luck, he looks lovely.

I have no personal experience of these but I thought that they looked quite good- http://www.townfields.com/saddles.htm scroll down and it is called the Fieldhouse Haflinger (sometime GFS Haflinger). I have ridden in a couple of other saddles made by GFS and they were lovely. Alternativly you could go down the synthetic route as quite alot of them have cob styles. Or just stick with what you have and try a Limpet and string girth as that could help.

Edit: Oh sorry just seen that you wanted treeless, sorry I am no help what so ever with treeless!

If I was you I would get a qualified master saddler out, they will know which saddles will suit you and your horse and also which saddles will not suit.

Mine have always had a saddler out to fit and check their saddles and I have never had any problems with my horses whereas I know people who don't have saddlers out and have had problems with the horses back

i would try to get some weight off your pon .i would not want to invest in a saddle, him loose some weight then have to buy another.cant you lend one for a while.its a vicious circle cos you need to exercise him for him to shape up.

Thanks for your help guys. I've had an E-mail from Trosion sayng that they can have someone come out to give me the saddles to try. But i have to put a substantial amount of money in a cheque to give them first. So I'll see how it goes.

Thanks again.
I shall be in touch and let you know how i get on.

Robinsons are now doing their own version of a treeless v.cheap.
My mare is the same shape as your boy (a barrel with no withers !) I did eventually find a "normal" saddle to fit her but it did take a while ! Good luck !

I've just been going through a similar problem with my 15.2 Section D. Saddles bridged, or rubbed, or were too long or too flat etc etc. BUT had master saddler out and immediately plopped a GFS Haflinger/Cob saddle on his back (NOT cheap) and it fits like a glove! Specially designed for the big barrelled, flat backed horse. Fabulous saddle. Looks a million dollars! Happy hunting

I have the same sort of horse and use a Torsion deluxe on him. I have just ordered for a customer a Thorowgood T4 xxw cob saddle, these fit this type of horse very well if you are on a budget and they will last for years.
