Well I'm a bit confused. I'm looking for a first horse, and everythings rather new to me about buying all the essentials.

I always thought when buying a saddle they had to be specially fitted by a saddle fitter.
When i went to try out a horse at a lovely dealers, my dad asked the owner about buying tack and rugs. He told us "not to go down the saddle fitting path yet"

So i'm confused, anyone wish to explain?

Thank you in advance :)

ETA - The man said he had a saddle that would fit the horse (he was selling a spare bit of tack i think or on behalf of someone else). I obviously need to get a saddle thats comfortable for my horse, do all of you use saddle fitters?
Seeing tack being sold over the internet hints that you dont need to some of the time?
I think he may have meant a "made to measure saddle" but

I wonder if the seller meant "Don't get a made to measure one yet". Maybe seller thinks the horse will change shape and therefore if you get one made to measure - i.e a new one, it wouldn't be long before you would need a newer one. Perhaps he thought you were going to get a brand new one. I would always get a saddle fitter personally - preferably one who has lots of second hand saddles to bring out and then they can tell you which one is best for the horse and also which fits you. Good luck!

without knowing the context of the convo and the condition of the horse it's quite hard to say what he meant. He could have simply meant, concentrate on buying the horse and work the rest of it out later...

Best thing is when you buy the horse, bring it home and arrange for a saddler to come out.

Got me on that one no idea what he meant unless he is going to add a tack package to the sale in which case treat with caution, I would get saddle fitter out to check fit anyhow.

To be honest any decent saddle fitter will come out charge you 50 quid for the fitting, fit a selection of new and second hand saddles then knock the 50 quid of the purchase price of the saddle you buy.

To find a good one post in here for one in your area or ask horsey people in your area you trust.

Sorry this is going to be negative:

But perhaps the seller is kind of hinting not to buy the horse or that he is selling it someone else, he doesn't want you to go buy a lot of stuff for him and then the horse may get sold from under your feet.

I normally get a saddler out with lots of saddles to try on him, or we will buy a saddle and ask the saddler to fit it to him and if it doesn't fit we wil ask the saddler to sell it on for us.

Ahh okay, the man did say he had a saddle to fit though (one he was selling on behalf of someone else.)
I didnt get the horse therefore didnt buy the saddle, I'm a little stumped.

So i should always go with a saddle fitter? x

Yes. ALWAYS go with a saddle fitter.

I would be VERY wary of a dealer trying to sell you a saddle

The dealer was very genuine, he has been recomended to me numerous times.
The horses at the dealers didnt have their own specific tack, they used some of the same saddles on different horses i tried. which i imagine isnt bad for a limited period of less than an hour.
But in the long run, i will go for a saddle fitter. Thank you :) x
