Just after some thoughts please before the saddler comes out :)

I'm tall, 5'11 with long legs, so currently ride in 18" saddle...

I have been told previously that my horse needs a 17.5" saddle, as an 18" saddle just goes over the last rib and *could* cause problems.

So - could I ride in a 17.5" seat ? Is it worth trying ? I want the horse and myself to be comfortable ... We only hack out and potter round the countryside (try to not fall off) but hoping to have some lessons after lockdown ...

TIA :)

Take a look at WOW saddles, where you can put a size one panel on a size two seat. Also some makes of saddles have far shorter panels than others for the same seat size, so have a look around before squeezing yourself into too short a seat.

I have a cheap old GP WOW with that configuration for sale if you decide to go that route.

Ahhh I used to have a WOW saddle - I loved it! (felt v secure with the narrow twist) Sadly the mare didn't like it *sigh*

I don't think I've ever (knowingly) ridden in a 17.5 - is it really noticeable ?

So I had a fitter out the other month and she let me try various saddles. I’m 5’8, so not as tall! And I suggested my horse would need a 17’, but my saddler recommended that I have a 17.5 as my long legs were pushing me too far back in a 17’. Luckily for me my boy takes a 17.5! The half inch can make quite a difference. Perhaps look at saddles that are specifically designed for long legs? Thorowgood do I believe but I’m sure there are other makes!
