Hi all, so we have been looking into saddles and have been told by the current owner a measurement of 16.5MW, is that good enough info to buy a saddle or is it better to have a saddler measure up? Thank you ?

YOU need a saddle fitter. Thise measurements are the absolute basic "need to know" bits. Making sure it fits the horse is far more specialised.
I have approx 8 17.5 W saddles in my tackroom, and not one of them would fit my horse, even though he takes a 17.5W saddle

Saddles vary so much, this is really not enough to ensure you have the correct fitting saddle. There are so many variables; width, tree points, rails, panel length - and then you have the pony to take into consideration; their conformation etc, and also the rider. Budget is also a factor when buying a saddle.

I would strongly suggest you have a saddle fitter out to take a look and measure up your pony and daughter properly. Please don't try and do this yourself - you may cause more harm than good.

If you want to give an idea of where you are, we may be able to recommend a good fitter in your area. :)

Also there are no constants, you could have 10 16.5 saddles and they'd all have a slightly different length footprint on the horse, plus different amount of space for the rider. I get slightly cross if fitters don't explain this and at least say "a small 16.5 or 16" or "a large 16.5 or 17" which is more realistic.
