What would you use? Leather?

I considered the field safe ones but do they break very easily? I worry they would break when leading in if the horse had a bit of a battle with something, just when you want to keep control.

I dont think anyone would recomend anything but a leather foalslip. I had a quite cheap one, it had some weak stitching that would break if foal got caught up on anything, this happened twice and i just re-stitched it loosely. it worked fine. My girly had a habbit of nearly getting her hoof thru the cheek piece when scratching herself so good job it broke as it was meant to.

if your concerned with them being caught up use head collars with buckles on the nose band and clop on the side so if you need to get it off fast there are lots of options, but i agree 'dose he need a headcollar'
