I have today put an advert up (going in shortly) on Horsequest but it seems there are NO safe first/second ponies for loan ever, all for sale for thousands....thing is I am not going to buy one when in a couple of years my daughters legs will have grown again and she is onto the next one.....am I alone in my thinking that there should be a big pool of ponies for loan lol!!!

Advert reads a bit like this:-

Desperately Seeking, 13-14hh confidence giver, safe, with brakes, no buckers, rearers, kickers or biters....last pony bucked and has shattered kids confidence. Loving experienced home and non pressure life for perfect pony.

Do you think that is unrealistic???

bit of a long shot, as our 16 year old 14.1hh pony may be going on loan in the future. but he has a few issues with laminitus but is 100% safe, real fun and a great confidence giver. he was my first pony as an 8 year old and had given me so much. PM if you want more details.

I've seen plenty of adverts for this type of pony but they're either for sale not for loan, or mostly 'up north' (we're not far from you, just south of Henley), as my daughter is a lanky 10 year old whose new school trousers are age 13 to get the length.
Consequently I don't think we'll be travelling to see them because they might not be as described. However earlier this year we saw a few adverts possibles for loan, so it could just be time of year. If you look at the end of the summer you may have more to choose from (people off to Uni or not wanting the costs for the winter). Or you could see if someone wanted to loan a pony that's advertised for sale - might not be selling, they might not want the costs of the pony, so it might work out?

We're only keeping an eye on the market for next year as we still have her 11.2 loan pony (which was a master at work aversion and also used to buck, steal the reins and canter off/put head to floor so rider sails over neck/swerve left to ditch rider/run out at jumps then realise they were set up next to each other so she had to jump the blocks from a standstill). Finally after 9 months training this pony is very fit and now completely understands it is easier to do as she is told (and then be allowed to take it easier), than try to avoid work with my daughter. So the other possibility is to invest time and money with a good instructor which we're lucky to have (neighbour of pony's owner) to work through a problem, but I agree it could seem to be a tad annoying to spend ££ improve someone else's pony. However I actually see it as improving my daughter, if she can ride tricky ponies really well then she is going to be fine on something less complicated - when /if we get one.

Happy hunting, hope something safe enough turns up!

They do exist - there is one on our yard that the family have on loan, but he is only on loan to them whilst 'between children' in the family he belongs to! (Older child move up to 14.2hh, younger one still on lead rein shetland! ). But I think they are probably few and far between, especially the 'safe and sensible' bit - most of the ponies that height I have know do have a naughty streak. Lady on yard just bought an angelic 6 year old connie who would fit your bill - but again she had to travel quite a way to find him plus he wasn't cheap....
Second what MH said though, pony club website might be best bet, when we put STar out on loan I had a lot of responses from there.
